Gearbox bearings gone? How do I know ?

I've got a 2006 t5 1.9 tdi - got a whining noise when accelerating , have been told by Vw it may be gearbox bearings but there not sure- the only problem is that it's not whining at the time - it seems to be intermittent ??

Does anyone know what would happen when u bearings have gone, could it be a faulty thrust bearing on the clutch?

It only happens when under load in all gears , a whining noise, but as I say some days it dosent do it and the next day it does

Not familiar with the T5 box yet, but it could be just the diff carrier bearings. Passats were quite prone to it, but could also be done in place, don't think the T5 can.

There is a carrier bearing on the intermediate (Off side) drive shaft, i would check this first.

Change your oil in the gearbox and check for metal, if it comes out clean i doubt it's an internal bearing, if it comes out like silver paint then your box will require some refurbishment.

Also check your wheel bearings, does it do it in a straight line or when you go round sweeping bends??

Yes it does it in straight line, whenever I'm accelerating , more noticeable in the lower gears when there's more torque ? But then get up the next day and it won't do it, then all a sudden it comes back?

A local garage will change the beRings for £580 all In- but I just dnt wanna go there in case it isn't and I've wasted my money -

I've checked the gearbox oil levels but not emptied it, can I tell from the gearbox oil if the bearings are gone??
