I am sure 100% this has been done however I am wishing just a simple understanding of wheel/tyre change that can be made to a syncro. (although I am not in a position to make the change). The syncro I have runs on 15" wheel's. Is it possible to change for a Larger wheel (ie;17,18,19,20") and what is the situation with tyre's with Larger wheel's. What Tyre's are the best option although expense outlay is equally important.
Does anybody know what tyre's were used by the Bundeswehr on there old T4 syncro and any supplier/cost etc. If I understand correctly there can be many problem's with changing from the standard wheel's and tyre's and so I am hoping to find a simple reasoning of if it can be done and to what wheel size and tyre size is ok. |

You can run anything that would fit to a normal T4. The only thing to remember is that all four wheels/tyres must be the same rolling diameter.
The 16" syncros that the German Army used had different gearing to run their wheels and to provide better low range. The compromise is that they didn't have what would be considered a normal top speed. Personally that's a compromise too far for me... The 15" wheels provide the greatest scope for effective tyre sizes and patterns. Once you go bigger you start making compromises in tread patterns and sidewall comfort. My preferred tyre size is the 205/70R15. This provides the right mix (in my mind and experience) between underbody clearance, wheel arch clearance and tyre performance. |

Thank you Seano, point's noted. I should say (and I know I will get the flak for what I am about to put) that I purchased a Syncro for purely Snow weather. I did not purchase a Syncro for off-road as I do not and have not any intension or plan's to take up off roading with this Syncro. However the last 5 winter's I have spent back in Germany with my 2wd T4 and sure the German road's during winter season are cleared etc to the point that a Syncro is not neccessarily needed as such however there are some road's that are not cleared between villages etc and as these are the places that I frequent I wanted a Syncro. Although I should say that with knowledge of driving and knowing your vehicle a 2wd is sufficient for winter driving.
Alas,I bought this Syncro but (again here will come the flak) I wish to have the arches filled with wheel & Tyre. I do not wish for the raised Look as is the norm' but quite possibly dropped by 40mm as I have Eibach spring's to fit and am simply fishing for a wheel and Tyre that can be fitted to fill the arch. If it mean's neccessary arch work then so be it but the stance that I would like is "ground hugging" not the divorcing the ground look by high raising. The snow that is laiden on German road's between villages in the Area's I go to is nothing special as it is not the Harz region or such and so Lower with Good Tyre's is all I need however having an idea on Wheel/Tyre size is basic knowledge I require. Top speed (unfortunatly) is something that I also need as Motorway/A'Bahn is used in my travel's back and on return. For Instance Borbet A's with BFG in the size you mention would this be viable if the Borbet's were 15"/16" (that is if they are available in that size). The wheel that I really would like would be the deeper dish the better ,just for an idea of the type of wheel that has my preference. Lastly, I understand there will be the "sacrilage" note's being placed and I respect your view's (Negative or Positive) however there are many reason's why one chooses a Syncro and sometime's there may be a rogue reason possibly such as my own in wishing a Syncro to be a little different from the norm' (what I have seen and read) from it's Stance. I just would like some imput so I can gain some knowledge on it before I venture with it. Again *Seano Thank you. |

but no really, there's plenty of lowered and standard syncro's out there you know what you want and need so go for it!!
just get a snow and ice tyre the michelin agilis are excellent had them on mine great on road, really sticky, and great in winter! don't bother with bfg you won't have clearance and the snow will cover the inside of the arch and go hard. you will have a t4 that far far out handle's a two wheel drive!!! |
