To stick with the analogy...no-one is asking to see the cards dealt, just if they even know how to play poker.

"You do understand how poker works right?"
- "I think so."
"What do you mean you think so, there's a lot riding on this..."
- "Well, I understand there are cards, and a table...but then it gets hazy"
"How about we talk through what the rules are, and how best to get a good result"
- "Yeah, that makes sense, I'll stand a better chance of winning then"
"Yes, yes you will."

When did "sales" actually have any real value ?

I've been a senior halfwit for some considerable time so I know a Boris Johnson when I see one..

If I was sold the NHS getting extra swillions a week then only to be told later that in fact the NHS would get less I think id be entitled to a refund.

That depends on whether you buy stuff or not.

Assuming you drive a van and you didn't steal it or make it yourself from Meccano you must have bought it.

If you think "Sales" or negotiating skills have no value, the chances are you paid over the odds for it.

Perhaps I've had many vans, perhaps I've only ever bought privately in an attempt to cut out the non productive overheads skimming off commission for doing diddly squat, and perhaps the point is we need a manufacturering industry as there is nothing to sell without decent people with decent skills making decent things.

To many folk these days making money off the backs of hard working talented individuals being paid very little so the non productives can cream off more profit for doing nowt.

The problem as my elderly uncle always said, "to many chiefs and not enough Indians".

Lachlan this is in my opinion one of your better and thought out statements and do agree with the gist of it

Lachlan: We're actually not far apart in our opinions of "Sales" jobs. Most sales jobs are soul destroying merry-go-rounds of targets and increased targets and more work for the same money, which is why I jumped ship many years ago and elected to work for myself for much less money. If you offered me 5X my current salary to go back into sales I'd still tell you to F&&* off

Getting back to the serious point: Anything that is worth a lot of money is worth negotiating (Haggling) over. You might not want to haggle, but you can save a fortune if you do and every business worth anything employs sales people to negotiate deals. I worked for UPS for years. A couple of pence per parcel doesn't sound a lot, but it makes the difference between a good deal and a bad deal.

And so it is with Brexit. We all want the best for the UK, so we all need to know what's on the table before we agree to a negotiating strategy. But the catch 22 is that many people in on the pre negotiations do not want the leave campaign to succeed. As soon as we agree a strategy it will be leaked by people who want to throw a spanner in the works. So we can't show our hand or it's worthless.

The only other option I can see working is for every MP to sign a non disclosure agreement and for the negotiating strategy to be made top secret. Anyone spilling the beans would find themselves facing charges relating to National Security and prison for a very very long time.

Sounds like a plan.
