Removed my EGR valve to see if it needed cleaning heres what I found!! And a few pics to hopefully help others. 1.9 BRS engine

Re-fitting is reversing of removing and plug in electrical plug again.

Followed your guide and cleaned mine today. There was also soot in the manifold but decided to leave that for another day. Mine was clogged up as bad as yours. I was hoping it would cure the black smoke on acceleration but its still the same after cleaning.:*

Well.... I have removed all 3 allen head screws but mine will not come off. How much "persuasion" did it take to get yours off?

Dr Jekyl,

After I removed the allen screws it only took a gentle rock (rotation type motion)from side to side and it pulled out ok.

Thanks for that! I can only get about 10 degrees of rotation but it's not coming out! I think I will give it a good soak (again) with penetrating oil.

My poor 2005 1.9 engine is having a new head fitted this week due to a cam belt tensioner failing, i will ask the garage if they can clean the EGR and inlet manifold while its all out...
What are the main advantages of a clean EGR?

Can I confirm the presence of a gasket that can be re used on the 1.9 for the egr or is there no gasket as I've been told different things?

There is 100% categorically a rubber O ring, which can be reused, there is no gasket. T:

Hey there, I'm in the middle of taking the EGR off my VW T5 1.9 2008.
3 allan head screws are not out and EGR is loose and wants to come out, can I get that electrical connection off!! No, is the simple answer! Do they just pull off or is there a catch you need to release before it comes off. Just dont wanna yank it and break something!

Sorry that was meant to say the '3 allan head screws ARE out'.
Just the electrical plug needs to be removed so I can get the EGR out.

The electrical connector is a fiddly thing to disconnect unless you've done it before!

I managed to remove the EGR from mine the other day with out disconnecting the wiring connector, with the EGR pulled out of the manifold, you can turn the EGR over and see the tab you need to flick out to remove the connector.
