Is the latest mk7 golf just a re-nosed and styled mk6? Probably.
I guess it must make financial sense to just re-tool a few parts like wings, bonnet, tailgate, dash, lights etc. and bolt in a new engine range, rather than the millions required in R&D, tooling and re-engineering an entire production line for a completely new model.
Take a look at VW's current 'A5' platform:
Audi A3 Mk2 (8P), Audi TT Mk2 (8J)[1], Volkswagen Touran (1T), Volkswagen Caddy (2K), SEAT Altea (5P), Volkswagen Golf Mk5 / GTI / R32 / Rabbit Mk5 (1K), Ĺ koda Octavia Mk2 (1Z), Volkswagen Golf Plus (5M), SEAT Toledo Mk3 (5P), Volkswagen Jetta Mk5 (1K), SEAT LeĂłn Mk2 (1P), Volkswagen Tiguan (5N), Volkswagen Scirocco (13), Volkswagen Golf Mk6 (5K), Ĺ koda Yeti (5L), Volkswagen Jetta Mk6 (1K), (16), Audi Q3 (8U), Volkswagen Beetle (16), Volkswagen Eos
...all technically the same vehicle underneath.
It's quite easy to roll out the "lazy designers" line, but I would hazard a guess that they have been working to a brief where budget constraints have been at the forefront.
Lets not forget they tweaked the split, bay, wedge and T4 several times along their lifespans. I guess they've called this one the 'all new' T6 because T5.2 sounds a bit rubbish I:
