I needed to add some rear seats into the back for the kids. i wanted some flexibility so after some searching I decided upon some Renault Espace seats. These were chosen as they mount into rails and have integral seatbelts. The runners are long enough to span 4 of the crossmembers, meaning four fixing per rail, as in the Espace. The floor needed holes drilling to suite (I actually managed to use two of the standard fixing points), and the rails needed a couple of additional holes drilling. As there are four fixings and four rails I needed 16! spreader plates with captive nuts for the underside of the van. With VW wanting ÂŁ7+vat for each I decided to just make some! A bag of high grade nuts from the stores at work, along with some 2.5mm thick undrilled Unistrut, plus an evening in the garage heralded the below;
These were then fixed into the van;
With the floor lifted another inch to accommodate the depth of the rails, and slots cut into it, I now have a fexible seating arrangement in the back. The rails can take four seats, and can slide back and forth etc.
I wanted to keep space to the sides so I can put a pod down the drivers side of the van to a contain leisure battery etc (the current project) for a onboard entertainment and charging etc.
