My van clutch is pretty poorly and the cost of a new one fitted is damn expensive so im thinking of tackling the job myself. On a scale of 1-5, 1 being simples and 5 being call the A-team. How hard is it? What if any special tools do i need and where can i get all the torque settings etc i need?
Thanks, Phil. If you can't see the bright side of life polish the dull side. |

Without the correct tools, to do it in situ approx 7.5 on your scale! There is a frame that basically holds the engine in the correct position to enable you to remove the gearbox. To get the engine in the correct position you need to unbolt ALL the engine mounts. This is a well dodgy thing to do without the frame, as you think you have it all suspended and balanced nicely (with an engine crane etc) Then you unbolt the gearbox which is roughly the same weight as the engine (it feels that way when its making a serious bid for freedom aided by a hefty dose of gravity) and not only are you fighting the gearbox you have an engine that is attempting to do much the same thing with an engine crane attached to it. Get it done by someone with the right kit. Or drop the engine and gearbox right out of the van and split them on the floor. Cheers Trev. |

There are plenty of ways to do this without special tools - don't be put off.
Do a search and you'll soon see the block of wood method, The ratchet strap method, Scissor jack etc.. etc... I'd say its a 4-5 on your scale - hard but not impossible. |

definately have a go yourself,a lot easier on a two post ramp, you can save yourself loadsa time using air tools...6 hours to do the job...
we normally start first thing in the morning and it's all finished bar the paying by lunch time...it like many things in life if youve got the right tools for the job then it's easy |

HI, I am always game for a go so did mine last year with no special tools on the drive with a couple of ramps.
Conclusion - I will definately get some else to do it next time ... It is quite difficult to do but certainly not impossible, the gearbox is really really heavy I slid it off onto my chest under the van and thankfully I am quite robust as it feels like it is crushing you, weighs a ton. Dont do it in cold weather it is no fun in the summer ... cheers Ben |
