Question Engine oil-whats best

High milage 2.5 TDi T4

Have always used a semi synthetic oil 10-40 is that right.I am ok with spending 20 to 35 for a 5 litre bottle.
What standard should I look for on the side ,the last lot only stated ACEA B3 API CF and was Comma Diesel lite no other standard quoted.

Anyone know whats best ?

Make sure it has VW 505 or 506 standard on the label. If it hasn't don't touch it.
Unipart do an own label for 14 for 5 litres (you will need approx 6 with filter) It is VW 505 and I use it. (I change every 3 to 4K miles anyway)
5w 40 is what I use this time of year anything thicker may effect your turbo in cold weather.

What year is it. A lot of the 2.5's (not sure if all) use the pd pump and so require the correct type of oil for pd engines.

Comma Diesel PD : http://www.camskill.co.uk/products.p...b79s4393p57104

Carlube triple r : http://www.eurocarparts.com/ecp/c/Vo...1061&0&cc5_280

If your van is a non pd engine then you can use a 505.0 oil, if its the pd engine then you must use a 505.1 or higher

Here is list of the vw oil specs, you will need 505.0 for pre2000 vans and 505.1 or higher (except 506.00) for post2000 vans.

Here are the VW Specs and explanations:

Volkswagen Group Oil Specifications and their Applications

VW 500.00
This is an “old” oil specification and is applicable to engines built before model year 2000 (up to August 1999)
Viscosity ratings: SAE 5w-40, 10w-40 or 20w-40
This oil can be used in all petrol and some diesel engines, apart from those referred to under other specifications.

VW 501.01
This is another “old” oil specification with exactly the same application as
VW 500.00.
Viscosity ratings: SAE 10w-40, 15w-40 or 20w-40

VW 502.00
This oil can only be used in petrol engines and is recommended for those which are subject to arduous conditions. It must not be used for any engines with variable service intervals or any which are referred to under other specifications.
Viscosity ratings: SAE 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40

VW 503.00
This is a relatively new oil specification for petrol engines with variable service intervals. It includes the AUDI S4, but not the RS4, or the TT and S3 with outputs of more than 180bhp.
Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

VW 503.01
A new oil specification specifically for the RS4, and the TT and S3 with outputs of more than 180bhp, Passat W8 and Phaeton W12.
Viscosity rating: 0w-30

VW 505.00
For all diesel engines prior to model year 2000 (August 1999)
Viscosity rating: 0w-40, 5w-40 or 10w-40

VW 505.01
For all diesel engines with unit injectors (Pumpe-Duse or PD) without variable service intervals.
Viscosity rating: SAE 5w-40

VW 506.00
For all diesel engines except those with unit injectors, with variable service intervals.
Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

VW 506.01
For all diesel engines, including those with unit injectors, with variable service intervals.
Viscosity rating: SAE 0w-30

Non of the T4 2.5 tdi's are PD mate. They all have a distributor type pump.
PD run off a camshaft and are in the newer VW's

Well thats going to save me a few quid then
Just looked under the bonnet of mine and the sticker says 506.00 (so definately not pd) but mine has option of variable servicing.
So, seeing as I don't do by variable servicing and change my oil every 5000 miles i can use a 505.00 oil ?
But the 505.00 spec says only for vans year 2000 and older (mines 2002) or is that just because of the introduction of variable servicing after 2000

It's basically the same stuff mate. I think they just change the spec number to make the owners of newer vans lace out more money.
Mine is a 2002 and says 506 on the slam panel but when you go to the guys at the motor factors (trade counter) my reg number is listed as 505 spec.

Take any of your cars/vans into a main dealer and they use what ever oil is in there pump for most of or possibly all the cars they service, petrol or diesel. also will use what ever brand offers the best deal or "incentives".

most of your vans that have full service history- have a check to see what oil has been used, probably not the correct oil.

i use toyotas own brand 10-40w oil in all my fleet lol - oh and chuffin hells fleet as well because i get it at a good price lol

but for piece of mind use what ever oil your handbook recomends.

Thumbs up Re: Engine oil-whats best

What the hell, treated the van in the end to Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel synthetic 0-40w halfords list price 47.99 for 5 ltrs.Conforms to many spec in VW 505.00 and 502.00 and probably better for the turbo in the morning
Trade card down to 38.39 ! a good saving and will probably be in there for 6 months as I don't do that many miles.
Cheers
