Just got back from "the pod", what an excellent day. I must say "aircooled" is not my thing, but there was some really cool stuff there.
The sight of 2 coachbuilt campers going head to head down the strip will stay with me for a long time. :D:D
PS. I will not be getting dreadlocks, a wooly hat and jeans 5 sizes to big.

I took the Wife and kids up there, great day out. That Jet car was like nothing else i've ever seen, unbelievable!!! I was disappointed that there was'nt any T4 or T5's in the 'For Sale' or show area's. Seeing as it was a also a Camper & Bus show i expected there to be quite a few as I was really looking forward to having a good nose round a few to get some ideas. I found myself wandering into the camping area to have a look instead.

Hi Guys,

There was a T4 on a stand, Ultra VW's editor owns one and had it proudly on display. I mentioned that my T4 was the only one on the strip all weekend and he said he thought it was pretty quick! Compliment indeed :D

My trouble is that I have no figures on another T4 on the strip.

On the subject of the Jet Car, it never ceases to amaze me every time I see it run. I have stood just a few feet away when it sets off (wearing shotgun ear defenders) and it blows your mind with the noise...then the heat!

You can see how I got on at the weekend here:

Hi Tim,

I actually cheated a bit with that pic, it was at a bike only event and the guys were cleaning the track still so I sneaked her on and got out and took the photos myself!

I do normally sell loads of that shot of peoples cars and bikes, they like the Santa Pod sign at the bottom, so do I. :D

The three T4s were in the Big Bang Autoglym competition for the best T4 I believe. The one on the left won, I saw his van at The Ace it is beautiful and he is a forum member, I forget his name. The blue Gulf one is owned by Bob aka 'Desperate Dan' a sound fella who I also met at The Ace. I'm lovin' his colour scheme and badges.

My T4 blew up on the way down but thanks to my T3 Syncro we rocked up late Friday night.

You guys did the forum proud.

At the weekend I enjoyed the thrill of going down the strip @ Santa Pod in the #1 championship winning car in the Sportsman, Alternate Engine classes.

I got the chance to do this when the missus, Kate bidded on a charidee auction at VW Action '07. For various reasons the actual run was postponed till this weekend.

I did the whole thing. Driver signup, car checks, pit lane cruise, pit crew checking my kit and strapping me in and of course the magical 1/4 mile drag. Even with me in the car Spencer Tramm managed to squeeze out a 9.07 quarter - the fastest ever passenger run down the strip apparently

Still wearing the daft grin I had when he floored it. 0-60 in 1.5 seconds does that to you.

Pics and a link to the video are below. Suffice it to say I shall be going down the strip (in something slightly less wild) soon!

when the jet cars first started running at the pod they used to blow the windows out of the timing bridge. So they staff had to stand holding the windows in place each time it launced, one year it even belew the 3 pin plugs out of the wall and knackered the PA and timing for a bit. Even saw them run two side by side once - madness. Saying that just come back from watching the drag racing in the states and that is something else, which is good news as many of there cars making it over here a couple of years later so lots to look forward to at the POD

I guess the jet cars are straight dragsters? i like to go sometime to Santa Pod. Looks great fun from the posts:)

I work for Howmet Castings who for a short time were involved in jet engine powered Endurance racer car that used to compete against GT40's many years ago. Peak power at 57000rpm! and no gearbox i bet it was entertaining at Le Mans!

The Jet Car at Santa Pod is the world's fastest 1/4 mile Jet Funny Car, at 336mph as far as I can remember. It set the record at the Easter Thunderball in 2006, Martin Hill was the driver and although it is insured to run at 270mph gave it the full beans for the whole track, the air was good and dense and he said it felt like it engaged another gear and took off like a bat out of hell at 3/4 track. Result...a new world record A:

The car has a jet engine out of a skycrane helicopter, capable of lifting vehicles and other huge items. There was another one but it crashed and burned. The driver was ok, but the car was a write off.

You can see several bits of past funny car bodies in the Santa Pod Cafe at the back.

Santa Pod also holds the accolade of being the fastest drag strip in the world. Due to the fact that American Sammy Miller's rocket powered 'Vanishing Point' was banned in the US and as a result he had to travel here to run it. Apparently he used to black out during the run and would often be seen to be bleeding from his ears when he got out of the car!!!

His record is in the region of 386mph in 3.58sec:jd

I know I saw it run

Slammin Sammy was certainly a man apart, when Vanishing Point ran it was always slightly eerie, because even though you'd seen it ,you could never quite believe, the times or speed, truley scary.

I also believe that he had plans to run a car with a rocket motor that had come out of a lunar module via NASA, however once the NHRA found out about it they promptly banned him from running anywhere in the world !! :D
