Help! Van dilemma......

I currently have a 91 SWB panel with a 2.0 petrol engine. Its been for an MOT this week and I have realised its covered less than 2k miles in the last 12 months. It almost seems pointless having it, but I love having a van. I run a passat tdi as a daily and I cant live without 50mpg at current diesel prices.

So what im thinking now is sell both and get a diesel t4 to run daily....but what sort of mpg are people getting from their T4's? Im guessing I will struggle to get 50mpg from a 2.5tdi. What are the 1.9TD's like on fuel? I know they make similar power to my 2.0 petrol so I would be happy with that but im not sure about the 1.9D.

Any thoughts guys?

as t4,s are very heavy (do they weigh 2 tonns ?)my 2.5tdi is 25-27mpg 2002 model auto

id say smaller engine the more work its got to do small family cars have 1.9td engines

but maybee a 1.9 owner will tell us the mpg they are getting

how about this then i picket up a 2003 2.5tdi drove 96 miles x country never went faster than 55mph or 2000 rpm topped up tank 1.66 galls .=57.83 mpg.hard to beleive but they dont like motorway speeds drops to 35mpg i now drive slower cannot afford fuel cost.but my pocket is richer.just try slowing down.it does work..did same jorney in rover 45 tdi same speed did 53.66mpg.

I get 30mpg towing a 800kg trailer - 500kg car + 300kg trailer - also with about 200kg of gear in the back. Thats at average speed of 60mph. Im sure the old man when it was around 1.08 a litre got 420 odd miles from 40's worth so:

40/ 1.08 = 37/4 =9.25 G
420/ 9.25= 45 mpg

Still not your 50 to the G but ok

Rhosneigr to Newquay, late at night, cruise control at slightly illegal speed, 24.2 mpg!

Have some of that!!! Never again!!!!!

Done the same trip before and got 36 mpg full loaded.

SPEED IS THE KEY!!!!!!!!!

My old 1.9 was the same, thrashed it everywhere and it never did less than 33mpg, a lot better than the 2.5's on fuel i think!

My 2.5tdi averages about 35mpg, will do more on a long run as long as I keep it under 70 T:

Problem is I do a fair few motorway miles. My 2.0 petrol still gives me more than 30mpg even at 80mph! Given that it would cost me more to get a diesel van and the current cost of diesel....perhaps a smaller daily driver is the answer? Or even an LPG conversion....

I was sure that 2.5TDi's did better MPG than the 1.9TD's but now it seems i'm wrong

my 1.9TD is currently doing 28mpg .... hmmm time for some investigation as that seems a little low.... I do thrash it a bit but if crftom gets 33ish mpg .....

90 ish to fill tank. Anywhere between 550 and 650 miles to a tank. Thats usually a mixture of motorway and cov city drivin!
Hope that helps you

I drove to sunderland bout 4hr drive there and then 4hrs back and used a full tank of fuel

Clocked it at 448 miles started out fuel light had beeped at me so filled to top

and pretty much in the red when i got home but no beep yet

Got to north sheilds stopped for 35 mins then set back

some points when as fast as it would go(very long time sat on my but non stop) but mainly 60-70 mph

so next month ill try it slower around the 60 mark no faster and see if i save much

the bus had just me in it and on the way back its 60 kgm heavier but with only half a tank so id say pretty even either way

so people can get 5-600 miles on a tank i want that too ! :ILU:

hey buddy... before i dropped and stuck alloys on my 1.9td I was getting around the 40+mpg after a service... but now its been lowered and it has heavy (compared to steelies) alloys on it, i'm now looking at around the 30mpg area... Still drive at around the 75/80 mph region and she's running beautifully... have to say its definately worth having a smaller engine now, had to sit in traffic for an hour to get into sainsbury's to fill up with diesel!!!

Jono :ILU:

p.s... van has only done 90k so she's young and comfertably run in.... T:

You people are not even trying to use fuel !!! 2.5 petrol with an autobox, 20 to 25 with a mix of driving, some slow, some fast, but all enjoyable. That would be equivalent to 40 to 50 mpg with a gas conversion, a very serious consideration. For any of you autobox owners out there, I have just had my oil and filter replaced in mine and it has improved my mpg by approx 3 mpg! Just a thought.

Can anyone find that thread that showed the bhp & mpg for all T4 models? It was on the old forum and I thought someone might have copied it onto here as it was really useful, but it basically showed that the 102bhp 2.5 tdi's got the most mpg!

My 2.5tdi is managing about 600 to 650 on a full tank. According to this calculator (http://www.torquecars.com/tools/uk-mpg-calculator.php) Thats 39.4mpg. Not bad really.

Heres the trick though. I avoid motorways. That 650 starts to look more like 500 when I hit the motorways. I also keep to 70 on fast roads. I also have got my 26 mile commute to work sussed and i can coast for about 8 or 9 miles of that. It's quite hilly. I have got alot lighter on the right foot since fuel went bonkers.
Hope that helps some.

Just as an aside, my girlfriend wants a new 2nd hand car. Looking at Clio 1.5 Cdi and it gets 62+mpg! Makes my 9 and a bit look positively polar-melting!

How fast do you drive on motorways? My van returns its best economy on the motorway.

My passat does 600-650 miles on a tank, but thats costing me about 65 at the moment. If I could be close to that with a van I could probably justify running one daily.

I found a few notes I made from that thread when I was looking for a van:

1.9d Swb & Lwb body BHP 68 MPG 45
1.9 tdi BHP = 68 MPG 40.94
2.0 Petrol Swb & Lwb body BHP ? MPG ?
2.4 D Swb & Lwb body BHP 74 MPG 39.23
2.5 tdi (blue I) Swb BHP 88 MPG 40.94
2.5 tdi (silver I) Swb & Lwb BHP 102 MPG 43.46
2.5 Petrol Swb & Lwb BHP ? MPG ?
3.0 Vr6 (red I) Swb BHP 150 MPG ?

Hope this helps!

I have driven them 1.9 1.9td + 2.4l + 2l petrol

the 2l petrol is the most econamical if driven sensibly hard to believe ? but true

cany speak for the 2.5tdi

my 2000 102 2.5tdi caravelle used to only do 25-28mpg when auto
new manual does 37mpg!!!!
dont do much motorway but around town i usuall fill up about 550 miles to a tank
motorway speed i stick to 66 seems to be a steady pace and stick cruise on
any more it screams
gives you a nice overtaking speed with loads of power on tap

and if your not carefull its not long till its in the red....
needs another gear
