I've got a 61,000 mile 2.5tdi 88bhp panel van which is basically always empty; I drive it in an economical manner and get 34.7mpg consistantly.

The last fill up someone else paid for the diesel, they wanted me to shift their gear to London as they were moving and as I wanted to get the job over with asap with I screwed the van there and back 400+ miles - filled up today and checked mpg - 34.2mpg

Don't know why I bother driving economically I:

Wonder why mine is apparently thirsty then? I've always thought it was a bit; the thing is low miles, fully serviced from new and runs spot on so I don't really understand why it never manages more than just under 35 mpg?

I've just done 725 miles on one tank. It cost 104 to fill up and it worked out at 41mpg.
This was mainly town and A roads driving like a granny and going up through the gear box to keep the revs down.

do you mean the same van as his or driven the same way?

If you're thrashing it with a ton in the back it's not gonna get 40mpg. What tyres you running?

same van, driven normally, noone said anything about thrashing it! and as I said 38-40 mpg. I am running adequate tyres for the job. I dont run with a ton all day though, as I deliver stuff it empties during the day.

Fair enough. Asked about tyres cos some people run funny sizes that throw their speedos out by a long way.

I have had 785 Miles from a tank (Ex AA 160k miles)

That's about 45mpg, which was done mainly on motorways, driving normally (around 70mph not sitting at 56mph with cruise control)

I usually get about 550 from a tankfull in my 88 2.5Tdi, I started driving like my mum when the diesel prices went mental, and got 654. Not a huge difference. How the hell do you get 785, thats brilliant, I'd feel like I was sticking it to Gordon every time I started the van.A:

they have smaller tyres that make it look like you've travelled further...
