Which is the best engine to go for?

I'm on the hunt for my next van and was wondering which one has the best engine to go for. I've had a manual 1.9TD van which I found a bit gutless but 40mpg, and an auto 2.5TDI caravelle which was quick, but 25-30mpg. Is there any difference between the TD and the TDI variants as well??

the t4 1.9TD is not direct injection like a TDI (look on wikipedia for details of the difference.)

1.9TD offers you a computer free engine. It is cheaper to service and you can sort stuff out yourself reletivly easily if you fancy it. It can also run off veg oil.

2.5TDI offers more power. It is controlled by an ECU and has a bit more electronic wizardry. Its more expensive to service.

Manuel gives you better fuel effiecincy.

Autoboxes seem to not be good for high millage.

get a Manual 2.5TDI, got plenty of go, plus the last time i filled up mine i got 42mpg.

the VW figures show that the 2.5TDI has a better combined MPG figure than the 1.9TD

I'm coming round to this way of thinking...

... but with all this LEZ stuff I'm involved with, they keep telling me to put a newer engine in mine, so how about a 20valve Audi S4 engine...
