but now you've driven a 2.5 you'll find the 1.9 really sluggish so i hear

I have both : one 2.5TDI (102HP) and one 1.9TD

The 1.9TD needs more diesel than the 2.5TDI to get along in the everyday traffic .
The 1.9TD is a very simple and easy to repair or do maintanance on it , but he is underpowered when original. I have increased turbo boost and adjusted the injectionpump , closed EGR valve , and added an extra oil-cooler and it has now about 85HP . Runs fine now :D It certainly runs better than the original 68HP ;)
The 2.5TDI is some more expensive for repairs (like the timing belt) , but for the rest it's a very reliable engine .
I do prefer the 2.5TDI engine for the driving fun , it's "smoother" as the 1.9TD because that one has to "work" more .

2.5s have so much spare power they dont have to work anywhere near their full potential. So in the long term their moving parts last longer less mech probs etc. smoother more refined drive good mpg can not be bettered!

I've had a 1.9TD (not TDI), and a 2.5Tdi auto. The 1.9TD was ridiculously economical (40-50 mpg) and fine around town, but very noisy on motorways and struggling in 2nd gear on a steep hill.
The 2.5Tdi auto was quiet and very powerful but really drank the juice (25mpg). I've heard the 2.5TDI manual is much better.
I'd like to know how the 2.4 non-turbo, and 1.9TDI compare.

There wasn't a 1.9tdi. Only a TD. You can fit a 1.9tdi out of a golf, which (if tuned slightly) delivers better economy than the lot and around 160bhp with a basic tune and front intercooler.

Just answer me this, 'how often do you need to repair it'?

Every 60k for the cambelt, I have a very good mechanic and was able to do the cambelt inc waterpump etc for 200 inc vw parts. Timing can be tricky but with some critical advise from me that it had to be millimetre perfect the timing was spot on.

As much as i enjoy driving my 1.9TD i wish i'd have held out for a 2.5. Just been to Wales this weekend in it and it really struggles up some of those hills.

2.5 tdi is a cracking engine they keep on pulling only trouble is the clutch cant keep up with the engine, well thats my personal opinion anyway. Jumped back in a 1.9td after driving a 2.5 tdi for a month and felt there must be something wrong. The temptation with the 2.5tdi is to drive it as fast as it will go as they pull so hard and mine was only a 88bhp blue i so i can only imagine how much fun a red i could be.

I keep seeing 1.9TDIs advertised, and a friend used to have a 1.9TDi (with a blue 'i'). Are you sure? However, I'm very interested in the golf engine conversion. Is it a straightforward swap out?

if your friend had a 1.9tdi i dont think it left the factory with the tdi, t5's have a 1.9 tdi but not t4's. 1.9d, 1.9td, 2.4, 2.5tdi are the deisel engines that t4's had.T:
