How empty is empty??

As I'm a relatively new owner keen to see how many miles I can get from a full fuel of tank can you let me know how low can you let the gauge run before it runs out? Unlike most cars I have owned my T4 has a red line on the gauge then a white one after it - can you run it to the last white line or even below? (I know in an ideal world you don't want to continuously run diesels on empty becausxe of sludge in fuel tank etc etc...

Any comments appreciated...T:

My old 1998 1.9TD, don't know exactly - certainly very low in the red zone.

My current 1997 2.4D, HALFWAY THROUGH THE RED ZONE IS EMPTY!

I thought I easily had enough juice to get me to a rural garage. From the first splutter to stone dead was about 2 miles.

I'm probably unlucky that the gauge on mine is less accurate, but I'd expect the variation to be fairly random across each example and across all models/years.

My advice is DON'T PUSH IT, and have a fuel can and a filler funnel with you!
