102 or 88 BHP: Worth the extra?

Currently I have a 1.9TD van which I find to be really underpowered. I'm definately after a 2.5TDI but I'm wondering, is it worth the extra money for the 102BHP instead of the 88BHP version?

I have a 88bhp and i would say yes.T: there is a lot more scope with the 102. I'm scratching my head at the moment to PP or not to PP but had i had a 102 version i would have just gone for a remap. So if you have the choice of buying go for the 102.

yes. if you can get the 102, better bits as standard and much more scope for development .

Was originally looking for a 102. Bought an 88 almost 3 years back with 48k miles. Had it chipped after 8 months.
Have now done 60,000 miles in it, including return trip to Northern Italy before it was chipped, did the return leg of the journey (1200 miles total) with one 20 min fuel stop in Germany and the break for the tunnel in just under 16 hours.

Would I still buy a 102 only ?

No. Either are good buses. But depends what you want.

PSI Powerbox (300 ish) Difficult to be precise ( been into this in various threads), but by comparison tests with 102s and other 88s, reckon between 100and 105 maybe, accelerates much better and has "longer legs" but still reckon will run ot of steam before a 102 on real long hills. Much safer overtaking.
Really would like to see a dyno graph, better power all round than standard, but not much more top end, seemingly much more torque.

if you want to go down the pp route then its cheaper if you have a 102 as you dont need the injector bodies, just new injectors and a re map.
I have a 102 and my girlfriends dad has an 88 and i think mine pi:ces all over his, saying that mine is an ex aa which is rumored to be 114bhp
hope this helps a little:ILU::ILU:

102 all the way, plus to boot the 102bhp has the best official combined mpg figure, so on average will get the best milage as you dont have to rag it everywhere to get places.

and as luck has it if you check the 'for sale' forum there are a few 102bhp 2.5TDI's for sale (cough cough... including mine... you know you want the power... cough cough)

good luck in the search if you do decide to take the plunge!

And I have an 88bhp mapped to 155bhp.....(Projekt Power)...IMO youw ill pay more to PP a 88 than a 102 (about 500 more in fact) but then the 102 will cost you that more to start with...the 102 is rumoured to have a stronger clutch or gearbox (can't recall which!) but both are great vans and if your gonna PP it anyway you won't go far wrong...T:

If its power you want go for the 2.5 petrol or VR6 petrol, and if its efficiency you are after then LPG gas it. Save the oil for your chips! :)

easiest way to tell is the TDI badge on the front grill. If it's all silver then it's a 102bhp, if it has a blue 'I' then its the 88.

beware though badges are easy to change! so check under the bonnet, the 102 has an intercooler on the top of the engine, the 88 does not

Cheers fella's. Appreciated. Just needed some reassuring that it's worth spending the extra money for the extra power.

problem there is its also easy to put an intercooler on an 88 .my mates has one but its still an 88 and i know of a few others around aswell

No rumour - the 102 has a different gearbox. Anyone who has driven both would wonder where reverse has gone!!!

It can depend on the model you want. I wanted a 888 longnose with electric windows. They dont do it in the 102. Im pretty sure all 102's were short nosed.

102's do come in long nose (caravelles or post 2003 vans I think), and if you find one with the electric pack then it'll have electric windows etc. The vast mjority of second hand 102's out there are ex-AA which are all short nose so it can be hard to find a long nose for sale!

Never seen a long nose 102 van except one that the panels added later
