Do you legally need a 3rd brake light?

I've just had a tailgate conversion done on my 2001 ex AA and now have no 3rd brake light.
I was wondering if you have to have one on certain age vehicles or not?
They have to be fitted on new vehicles but can you legally remove them?

Any ideas?:)

and in Europe since 1998, a central brake lamp, mounted higher than the vehicle's left and right brake lamps and called a Centre High Mount Stop Lamp

Found in wikipedia :D

So post 1998 you need one.

Mine is a 2002, it doesn't have one:confused: Is it because it was a van?

As far as I know the only legal requirement is that you have 2 working rear brake lights?

My 03 van has no 3rd brake light. Did start life as a panel van. Caravelles seem to have them as standard.

Also, pretty certain it's a case of; if it was fitted at the factory it must work. If vehicle was registered in uk without one fitted at factory, it's not necessary.

No, the law states that you must have 2 red brake indicator lights set at the same level.

I fitted a rear fog light in the rear window of my (smaller than a T4) van and I'm sure it kept the thoughts of the guys behind me on the job when I braked. I had to use a shroud made from a M/C innertube to stop the red light leaking forward in my mirror, if you can visualize what I'm trying to say! ! ! Cheers, Tony.
