Newbie - Buying 2.5Tdi - Price / Miles ?

Hi guys,

Been reading up and now I've got a quick question or two.

I'm looking to buy a T4 2.5 TDi but am finding sellers not knowing what bhp their van is.

Apart from calling a dealer / looking in the service book is there any easy way to tell ?

I've got my eye on 2 vans at the minute both 102bhp, LWB, 2001's.

One has 170k but full VW history 2500
One has 110k partial non VW history 3000

I know the vans carry miles well but 170k is worrying me a bit as does the other which is tidy but not full history.

How do they look in your view ?

I can afford more (up to 4k) but the higher priced ones don't seem much better and tend to be plus VAT which these aren't.

Thanks

Mark

170 is a lot to me. I bought our camper with 126k on it which was a little high for my liking, no history at all:eek:
But we fell in love with it, went for a long test drive, all seemed fineA:
It's a 2.5 tdi too, the previous owner had a major service done by his mate who owns a garage, no proof, just his word but he was a genuine decent chap.
Not sure what to suggest really but the 110k would appeal more to me, but depends how they look from the outside to. Hope that helps a little*<:-)>

easiest way to tell is to look if there is a massive great intercooler on top of the engine (like a mini radiator)

Be obvious if you open the bonnet.

Although these can be easily fitted after so check engine codes.

ACV is 102BHP and AJT is 88BHP

88BHP's have a blue I on the TDI badge, 102's have a silver I on the TDI badge.

I bought my van with 174000 miles on it it has now done 236000 and has not missed a beat Rasp: it is an ex aa so has the service history.

Thanks for the replies.

I thought it might be down to an IC.. I know what one looks like, it depends if the sellers do !

Why are all the bargains always so far away ?

I'm going to wait to see the lower mileage one on Monday as I think I'd rather pay 500 to come down 60k.

That's always the way, when you get one you'll see a better one near by. I was looking for a lwb high top for ages. Ended up travelling for 2 hours to get it.
The next day on the way to work (the road I drive every day), what was there on the side of theroad for sale?
A lwb high top camper, couldn't believe it! Was much cheaper too. Mine was a lot better though and still pleased that I got it and would have chosen it over it the other one but it's just typical.

i cant see those miles being anything much to worry about(vw history:ILU:), look after the engines and they will do somewhere near 700k but like t4tomass says, you will find one(likly a distance from you) then you will see loads closer to youLOL:LOL:

and again, on the tdi badge,
I=88bhp
I=102bhp
and the rareI=150bhp

out of the 7 t4s ive owned only 2 were close by the other 5 ive had to travel to buy and all over 300 miles away .mileage on these vans is not an issue as they will do big mileage without hassle if maintaned and doesnt always relate to price either you also have to consider over all condition and spec .the way i see it higher miles usually means all the wear items have been done ie clutch ,discs cv joints etc buy one with 60-80000 miles and all these jobs are coming up soon and you will pay a higher purchase price too

I have to say based on me old mans last two cars that sounds about right, bought one at 71k and one at 86k

The audi with the 86k on cost 6000 over 3 years in parts,

The jag with 71k was of course over due it's 60k 800 service it turned out and cost about the same.

The cars with 30k ish and the van with 150k not been a problem.

Never occurred to me until you just pointed it out.. interesting.

Whilst I see your point at 110 and 170k the items could be original and knackered or replaced and due replacement again.

Ideally I like buying off individuals rather than traders so I can see how they treat it.

Really its a lottery I guess (but generally I've been lucky over my 20yr driving span)

Silver I or blue I on the back badge.
thats the way on the 2.5's

Go for the 110 mate.

The engines are good for 800k miles as standard.

I'm currently at 165 bhp and 130k miles and still not missed a beat. Or an A4 ;)

Bought mine with 116k on clock ('53 plate T4 2.5). Full history and runs well, it's the 'Blue-I' 88bhp one.

Goes sweet as a nut. One thing I did though was get my local garage chappie to replace timing belt (even though in history it had one done at about 80k). Better safe than sorry and 300 well spent for another 60+k miles.

Had a Pug 406 estate before this on a Y with 135k on clock, never let me down.

Look after them and they'll look after you.

Nah I dont want a badge - I wanted to know what they're worth because my van came with them on and i'm removing them, by the sound of it though they're not worth much!
