T4 Post Icon Wheelchair T4 buying advice/help (rust!)

Evening, we are going to be buying a van soon to cart about our three kids, one of which uses a wheelchair. The van will have a lift and clamping points fitted. We have the option of getting new (or nearly new) on a scheme where we never own the van or buy something older and own it ourselves. Obvious pros and cons of both options.

If you have the time I would appreciate peopleís thoughts on this Caravelle on eBay:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F132701836022

In terms of spec and layout it would be ideal for us, with the middle two seats removed.
Have a look at the rust on the sill, near the fuel filler and the wheelchair lift. Is it fatal? Could it be reasonably repaired? Would it fail the MOT?

I know any T4 would need maintenance, I donít mind that, just donít want to buy something which becomes beyond economical repair!

I have owned T4s and a T5 for work before, so I know my way around them. But not experienced rust like that.

Appreciate your thoughts.

It's not one I'd be considering; looks like it's had a hard life, wheels are unsuitable as not adequately rated, no service history mentioned in the listing, and as you've mentioned, the rust issues.
When it's says listed due to time waster my interpretation is, they turned up, saw it was a wreck so sacked it off.
There are many better examples about so keep looking.

Thanks guys - I had thought about the wheels already, I donít like them. But good points about service history, rust and eBay Ďtime wastersí!

I guess another question would be - how often do you see these T4 Caravelles come up for sale with a chair lift?? Iíve been looking for a while and only seen T5/6s.

In the flesh it may be better (or worse), you have to judge each one individually.

No one can tell you everything from a picture, just pass some general comments ................... as we have done. If it's viable go have a look, there may be more to it than the advert can tell us, as you have said 'you know your way around them'

The problem is looking at 15+ year old vehicles with lifts, as you know, is not an easy task. Most have been removed now, by the second, third, fourth, or fifth owners; so your choice on a T4 will be limited; and the wait between them longer.

We bought our T4 to use as a wheelchair vehicle 10 years ago after my Mother in Law had a stroke. We looked at about 20 vans in total and can offer this advice.

If possible go for a van which has a fold down ramp which is manually operated.

We looked at a number with mechanical operated ramps and lifts. Some where so complicated that they were hard to operate. Others had a habit of failing half way through their operation requiring some sort of reset whilst others failed completely leaving the door open and ramp outside the vehicle. This was an inconvenience we did not want to have.

In the end we bought a van with with a tail gate and fold down rear ramp that had movable tie-down straps and 3 other seats (2 M1 rated fixed seats and one M1 rated seat which could be moved on the floor tie-down railings).

Good luck with your search.
