T4 Post Icon What Sat Nav to buy???

I am thinking of treating myself to a new Sat Nav for the summer camping trips, but there seems to be so many on the market

I need one with UK and Europe mapping.

Just wondering what others have bought, and what feed back people can give me

I've got a Tomtom Routes XL (I think ) UK and Europe

It's generally good , good in France and reasonably on the ball with map changes etc. Clear directions to follow and a neat looking unit, plenty of options to tailor it to your needs (distance to junction etc, advance lane warning, Isometric view or plan view etc) Map share is handy where anybody can report a temporary closure/obstruction and when you update it will tell you (some times you get a temporary speed restriction when it has gone back to normal and it has not been reset)

One annoying thing is the speed (or lack of it) when updating, it takes a couple of hours to download from the web then update the unit (this is NOT my coputer, it's Tomtom's end that's slow) It only has to be done every three months or so and as such is not a major issue, just annoying.

I have no experience of other systems so can't compare .

we got a garmin 1340T, seem to have a better reputation/value than TT
lots of features - incl Europe, (otherwise cost a bomb to add) but prefer a map myself
only get one free map update (within 60 days of first use)
to us on long journeys biggest problem is you have a choice of fastest route (tends to go a long way round using motorways), shortest (goes through built-up areas) or eco (you tell me!), sometimes opts for odd routes
probably good if in cities & towns, they are a bible to delivery peops, we mostly open countryside so no info needed for miles

I've got a TomTom Rider2 with car kit as I use it on my motorbike as well and found it very easy to use.
I do agree with the amount of time it takes to update but I can live with that. I also have used it with the North America and Canada map and that was good as well.

used to test sat navs as part of my job.

tom tom and garmin were always best.

look at the price of updates as this can be really high with some and free/ cheap on others.
