T4 Post Icon Another will the rim/tire fit question ;).

I am looking at used VW rims to change from stock steel to mags.
I found two decent deals
- 16" 5x112, VW Road America OEM
- 18" 5x112, 18x7.5, offset 51 Golf Detroit rims
First question is do they fit T4.
Second question is what is the biggest tire size I can go with on 16" rims to give the van this beefy look.
And what would be acceptable tire size for 18" rim.
Are these proper weight rated?
Thanks.

You should be able to find the load rating by checking out the back of the wheel or asking the supplier.

With regards will they fit, you haven't given the ET of the Road america or the wheel thickness.

I don't see there being an issue with the ET of 51 on a 7.5 rim as there should still be plenty of clearance on the inside.

Factory fit VW wheels are usually around 45 ET so they will sit slightly further in under the arches.
Next make sure you have the same or larger cente bore, VW are 58.1 so larger and you will need spigots, smaller and they won't fit.

Tyre wise, 205 min -235 max for 7.5 rims

We live in a world of complications ..!! Ok , 5x112 will fit , but are they sufficient for YOUR vehicle ?? Generally , any wheels from a CAR may not be suitable for your vehicle , you must check your country laws and legislation before making your choice .. !! Depending on your model of vehicle , the load ratings will be different .. and also the load rating of tyre you choose to go on them ..!! Do further research to find the right combination that will suit your needs ...

My old Passat wagon had Road Americas fitted as standard - ET 37 offset as I recall.

I have 18s on my bus. The ride is ok untill you hit a poor quality road. Mines a daily driver and 18s are not a good idea for me. Im looking at going for 15 s 16s or maybe 17 max I still worry about the ride quality at 17.

So far I have cracked 2 alloys and have a crunchy shock at the rear now.

when you hit a pot hole that you cannot avoid the tiny profiled tyres on big wheels offer no protection whatsoever. The alloy and the shocks and mountings and bushes and whatever else takes the full force of way over a tonne and its making my bus sad . I hit one the other day coming onto the motorway and it sounded cataclysmic. I swore a lot.

I hate it. If the roads were better then it would be sweet. However they are not

I guess I will go 15 or 16 then.
I live in Edmonton, AB, Canada and the roads here are terrible.
I just need to find right replacement for stock steelies.
What about Benz wheels:

would these fit?

I,m sure you will have gathered that putting non-OEM wheels on your van is a minefield ..!! You do need to ensure they are up to the job , and with suitable tyres .. as stated , GENERALLY , car wheels are not suitable , so you need to tread carefully ....

I'm imminently taking delivery of a set of custom 17" "weller" type steels they've been imported from the US.

Maybe with a bit of research you can find something. I'm not sure of the American supplier but I'm under the impression it's quite a common thing to get hold of. The sticking point I assume is the importation to the uk which I would suppose wouldn't be to difficult for yourself being on the same continent.

You can have them made to any offset or size up to 18" I believe

Full of meaty goodness
