Hi. I'm new here and new to owning a T4 which makes me very happy! Except it has a leaky fuel pump and garage have quoted me £1k to fix it! Any way I can get this sorted cheaper? Thanks in advance for your help.
Mine was leaking from the throttle spindle and the driveshaft. Took it to a diesel specialist and sorted for just over £250. Sounds like they are trying to rip you off. Worst case scenario- pick up a second hand pump and get it fitted. Yours is probably leaking from the throttle spindle (very common) and shouldn't cost more than £150 to fix. Look up your local bosch service centre or diesel specialist and they will sort you. £1k is taking the P.
Depends where it leaks from, throttle shaft spindle is first to go, followed by the pump head or nose seal - the head and nose seals are a little tricky to repair in situ but the throttle shaft is easy - I do a lot, and can send you a guide for doing the throttle shaft and pop a seal in the post for free.
If you can get it as far as devon, I'll do it for you - £45 for a throttle spindle leak, £96 for a complete rebuild - It's not my job, just a bit of work on the side that pays for my addiction to VWs.
Thank you Reg. I'm not sure it would make it to Devon. Whereabouts are you? I'm going to get someone to work out exactly where leak is coming from. I'll get back to you - your guide sounds like it might come in very handy
Hi again. Thanks to everyone who replied to my post. Just a quick update - I found a local mechanic who gave my van a thorough check over and replaced 3 leaky fuel pipes, water pump, cam belt, fan belt and oil - all for a grand total of £389!! So was definitely worth looking around. So far so good and van is running very smooth. Off for first adventure next weekend.
