What's the bare minimum to cover most roadside breakdown situations?

Best thing is breakdown cover, never the cheapest option tho!! always go recovery/recovery plus package as over the 10 MILE TOW is an average of £3.50 A MILE PLUS VAT!!

ALWAYS make sure you have a good spare makes life easier for me! T:

o and its easy to access last thing you want is to be faffing around on a hard shoulder!

high vis vest is good

Depends where you break down u might get me as its my job Roadside Tech for a well known company I:

Usual tools as everyone else but wouldn't go anywhere without breakdown cover.

BEWARE though AA members. I left the AA for the RAC for two reasons.

When I bought a t4 after owning car based vans I was told the AA don't recover our sized vans.

Also, the AA won't recover you to your home if you have an accident minor or serious which leaves your vehicle undrivable. They will only take you to the nearest safe place.

This was a few years ago mind you so it might be different now but worth reading your small print.

For breakdown I try and fix it me self with me toolbox and noggin (ahem, phone and forum T:) then for recovery (not needed yet) I use ADAC, they cover me in this country and all european countries for 12 months, 80euros, when I call them here they send out AA, and they will tow me anywhere no problemos, better than paying same price for just AA/RAC/Green Flag but no insurance, onwards travel and euro stuff T:

places i travel are a bit remote! so full tool kit incl sockets, grips, usual screwdrivers, hammers etc, scissor jack, large allen key and bit sets, worklight, tyre removal / repair and wheel changing stuff ( yes i can remove a tyre from a rim at the side of the road!), gaffer tape, tie wraps, jump leads, lubricants, antifreeze, filters etc, spare cable, spare bulbs, relays and fuses etc, specialist stuff like vw pipe clamp tool, vac / pressure tester, multimeter, code reader, and vw e manual and parts e book on laptop. i have to say that over 35 years i have actually used most of this in anger on the road, so my minimum list. i also carry enough food and water for several days. i do carry gps, mob phone and recovery card, but have only used the card twice out of convenience, once was just to get a lift to the parts shop for a t2.5 clutch cylinder in germany! oh and a folding shovel cause when you are in the sh.t its only the depth that varies!!!

i admit this is probably extreme for a bit of local touring and camping, hope this helps.

After reading twowheelboy's post I checked to make sure that the AA would recover my van.
According to their terms and conditions -

Breakdown assistance is only available for cars, vans, minibuses or motorcycles which meet the specifications set out below. Please note that “car, van, minibus or motorcycle” does not include, amongst other things, electric pavement vehicles, electrical wheelchairs, bicycles (including electric bicycles), any vehicle which cannot lawfully be used on the public highway and/or any non-motorised vehicle.
Maximum Vehicle Weight: 3.5 tonnes (3,500kg) gross vehicle weight Maximum Vehicle Width: 7ft 6in (2.3m)
Assistance will also be provided for a caravan or trailer which was on tow at the time of the breakdown, provided that it falls within the above limits.
For the avoidance of doubt, we do cover electric cars, vans, minibuses and motorcycles.

Hopefully T4s meet these criteria!
Thanks for bringing this to my attention Twowheelboy - better to be safe than sorry!
