T4 Post Icon Just bought a T4 and engine has gone!

So we recently spent all day on the train going up north to pick up what looked to be a well looked after 1994 T4 Caravelle 2.4 (155,000) camper self conversion. Drove it all the way back down to the south west no issues, then took it to a garage near where I work to replace the two front tyres and track rods (he had thrown in track rods as there was play and hadnt got round to doing them) I also got them to look it over and found a small oil leak source unknown, and small fuel leak around the fuel pump and a mark on the timing belt with no history. The previous owner said the belt was changed a couple of years ago (less than 10,000) thats ok I thought I will change the belt next year for peace of mind.

Now the camper was all ready we thought we would test it out for a night somewhere not too far.....we got 10 miles down the road and sudden whining\screeching noise came from underneath with a loss of power and the engine sounded much louder than normal. Long story short got it recovered to my local garage, they compression tested it, found oil pumping through glow plug hole, took the head off to explore further and found the inlet valves had hit all the pistons, pistons are bent, possible damage to the big end and uneconomical to repair. Apparently the cam belt jumped and caused the damage. Head looks ok though.

So it looks like I need a replacement engine already! Do you guys agree and if so where to source? Any experience of the vege engines https://www.justkampers.com/vw-t4-pa...d-engines.html

We dont want to spend the earth as this is already a nightare financially but want to do the thiing justice, get some use out of it and be able to sell it on in the future!

Thanks
Dean

An unfortunate but sadly all too common story. If belt change was only verbally confirmed, regardless of engine that would be top of any list; especially if some damage or marks were seen.

The choice of repair, is always based on cost and time. New engine arrives ready to go, but costs more, repairing items can work out more cost effective, but involves a lot more work .................. contacting specialists, shipping and possibly waiting on more than one company to respond in a timely fashion.

Not having seen the vehicle, it's difficult to call regarding how much to invest. It was obviously the best you could find or the cheapest, as the SW is still in my mind T4 country so travelling north must have had its attractions.

There may be a member with knowledge of some specialists you need, but the 'south west' is quite a large part of the country.

Good luck with whatever you do, as it is a shame your T4 ownership journey has got off to such a bad stsrt

Best option imo is to try and source a 1.9tdi from a vw golf or similar, thereís info on here regarding engine codes, AHU is one I remember. The swap will be slightly more involved on the 2.4 but if you know someone reputable itís the solution I would be investigating as it will improve the van massively.

cheers.

The garage that noted the mark on the belt said it was oil free and didn't look like it was in imminent danger, otherwise I would have had it done there and then. I'm thinking of a simple replacement 2.4 otherwise I'm told it gets expensive - I didn't buy this vehicle for performance just for plodding along and weekend away. The vehicle is in otherwise good condition with very little corrosion and we paid £4000 for it. I think we have no option but to replace the engine and use it!

Will keep looking and let you know - cheers for the replies

odd, no head or valve damage BUT pistons are bent?

would have thought bent valves not pistons

sounds doomed anyway

YES but.......

swapping from a 5cylinder (2.4) to a 4cylinder (1.9) has a lot of diferent parts from the vw stores to fit in an OE manner

also, it is not a like-for-like swap so the labour costs are greater (if you can swing a spanner then its obviously cheaper)

then theres the wiring conversion, something that can cause headaches but actually quite simple

as to labour, theres plenty of 'speciallists' out there, some good & others not so good - this is your gamble (as they waill all promise the world )

Rich.

Thanks all.

Still looking at options...including the links sent - thanks

The best so far looks like cali campers in New Milton Hants, which is fairly local

He will do a 2.5 TDI (about 100k) conversion, plus cambelt water pump etc £3000 all in
or £1800 for the engine and conversion kit
