Hi folks

I've just been quoted 1650 + VAT to retrofit aircon to a T4 by www.alpinair.co.uk

They also suggested I'd need an additional unit to chill the back of the van if I was driving it in very hot weather with a full passenger load - that would be an additional 800 + VAT.

They need the van for 4 or 5 days.

My van is Dark Blue, Indian Blue. As it's fairly dark the paint does get hot, so I figured a cheap alternative was to chrome wrap the roof. I couldn't find anyone who really anted to attempt it. So bought some chrome wrap off ebay and had a go myself. As it's only the roof between the rails no one can see it. I figured the quality I purchased wasn't perhaps up to trade spec and nor was my ability so I did it in panels. Basically the flat bit between the ridges then the ridges. Looks fine if you can see it from above.
I measured the temp in one of the few hot days last year and the chrome was under 30 deg C and the blue was over 65 deg C. quite a difference and I think it did help to keep the van cooler. Almost tempted to chrome the side panels where the rear windows would go....but I don't want anyone mistaking me for some Arab Sheik !

Part done, I found you could overlap without it looking rubbish. I don't think my ability would mean I could do anything any good on the parts of the van you can see. I stuck very well so I have no fear of it coming off and it's nearly 2 years old now.
Probably cost me about 60

My 51 plate Multivan was ordered with Air Con as a factory fit. But VW failed to fit it. The dealer said they would get the VW spec cab air con fitted for me.

The factory fit Air con was actually an Italian make and was fitted by specialists in Swindon for me in a day. This was some 14 years ago so cost will be different. But came with all the VW Knobs etc and runs a treat. After many years it started to fail as they do.

I took it back to the same place that fitted it and they replaced some major parts and mountings that had corroded badly and for 250 for the fix I have what feels like a brand new air con.

There are companies out there and they should be able to get the right kit for the T4 to match up with your dash controls. It will be pricy, but you will use it.

When first fitted they brought the van back and said that on full whack, through one vent they recorded 3 degrees C'. Having used it in anger in the South of France and Spain, I know that I can chill the van way down when it is over 30 C outside with no trouble.
(At my age its the only time I get nipples like football studs!)

Good luck

If they propose fitting one as good as or better than the standard VW system then you should not need the extra unit in the rear. I regularly drive in 37c in the summer and my front only aircon does the job fine That being said I don't have 7 people in the rear so it depends on your usage.
