T4 Post Icon can a t4 57d swb run after starting without a battery?

A trip to Yorkshire. My battery warning light came on indicating the alternator was not charging the battery. I travelled 50 miles to get to a camp site but after stopping the engine using the key as normal, the engine would not start again. My engine is a T4 transporter 57D 2370 1995. I was wondering if all of the diesel engine systems could work WITHOUT a battery after starting. If yes, all I need is a recharge at the campsite to get started when I want to drive home, then drive home without stopping the engine. After getting home recharge the battery to start the engine and get the alternator replaced at a garage near home reasonably cheaply. If no then I need to get a mobile mechanic to fit an alternator before starting the journey home. Has anybody tried running a T4 without a battery after starting?
