I had the very same issue on an old beetle, bonnet bra made water marks underneath, they can be polished out, takes a lot of elbow grease.

You'll need a cutting compound better than tcut.

Thanks guys, after reading all your comments, I`ve decided on a bonnet wrap Got it booked in tomorrow morning, It`ll be black carbon fibre material rather than just mat black and will cover the whole bonnet except for the breather grill.

I can`t be doing with taking off the bra every day or other day, due to the weather, to dry the bonnet and bring the bonnet bra inside overnight to dry out, the weather will now get decisively worse leading into autumn and winter, so will become quite a chore sorting it out daily!!

The 3M material they are going to use is (relavely) thick, they guarentee their work for three years and the material is guarenteed for 10 (apparently), so is a lot cheaper than a respray every three years, even if the wrap has to be replaced in three year intervals! It should help with stone chips too.

Will post a few pics up of the wrap and the milky ares caused by the bonnet bra soon!

Thanks again for all your advice and links to relevant websites, it`s been very informative

Ritchie

Mate of mine got one but it was causing water to run in under the bonnet so it had to go.

I used a leather punch to put a series of holes in the BB just under the front lip of the bonnet. It stopped it collecting water along there and causing rust, well, no rust has appeared.
It didn't stop the discolouration of the bonnet & some slight bubbling, but I can't say the bonnet was exactly pristine when I fitted it. in fact, that was why I fitted it.

This happend to my last van (Paprika Red), took it to paint shop and they said water had somehow got under lacquer and caused it to go milky. They tried to polish out and there was no way it would shift. Ended up keeping the bra on.
Also had the same problem on the roof where my mag mount aerial sat. It appeared that anywhere water sat with something on top it got into the paint.
As far as I know paint was original and looked prestine.
