T4 Post Icon EGR Blanking 2.5TDi

After reading the very useful thread on blanking the egr on a 2.5TDi, I removed the complete egr valve, fitted an Allard intake pipe as well as blanking off the exhaust feed on my Caravelle. I taped over the vacuum hose ends and ran the van - seemed fine (not much noticeable difference). Prior to selling the van I removed the Allard pipe and the exhaust blanking plate and refitted the cleaned original set up - the van was noticeably quicker!! My question is should the vacuum pipes have been left open or sealed as I am about to refit the Allard kit to my replacement T4 Caravelle.
