Right so my can of worms (2000 2.4D AJA) has decided to turn the coolant system into an extra outlet for the exhaust.... So which way should I go? Pros and cons for either converting to a 1.9 or fitting a turbo. Both the garages that do these jobs locally have said either is good but that a 2.4 with turbo fitted and correctly set up runs brilliantly 馃

firstly, whats your budget?

a conversion will be expensive IF you are paying someone, repairing the 2.4 will cost then adding a turbo setup will probably double the repair costo_O

the 1.9tdi car engine will need a lot of 'extra' conversion parts to fit a t4 as theres not much except the gearbox thats transferable from the 2.4.

1.9tdi (1Z & AHU etc.) when running the ecu control can do amazing mpg's (40-50+mpg) and also run cruise control electronically:cool:

my suggestion is to drive an example of both(y)

my '95 t4 was a 1.9d & now has a 1.9tdi conversion. a friend had a 2.4d & I converted it to 1.9tdi (he prefers it over the 2.4)

where are you located?

The price quoted is just under 2k for a recon 1.9 engine and around or just below that for the turbo retro fit (not including any issues they may run in to). Unfortunately I don't know anyone that has both these to try out hence me asking here (would definitely rather try them). I'm based down in Cornwall

I would sell up your van as it is and put the money towards a 2.5 tdi or a 1.9 tdi converted already...As above, not much is shared between 2.4d and 1.9 tdi... Unless your van have sentimental value to you then spending 2 grand is not that much if you intend to keep it for a long time...

is that a recon 1.9 OR a recon 1.9tdi? either sound cheap if you consider the 'extras' involved in converting a car engine to fit into a van & then the 'extras' needed to fit it togther (2.4-1.9 specific parts).
these quotes, are they from a garage that know the t4 related conversions OR just someone that can swap an engine & may be a bit 'blind' to the diferences? (no offence to them?)

sorta BUT theres also the 'devil-you-know' especially related to rust / bodywork condition on the van(as we ALL know t4's rust!)

it's a hard one to advise on, buy another van = buying someone else's problems OR pay for a conversion & maybe chase problems & (sometimes) shoddy workmanship :censored:

It's a recon tdi, from a golf I believe. He is a local mechanic that changed over to specialising in T4s about 8 years ago. He has done both jobs many times and seems to have glowing testimonials to his work. Which puts me at ease a bit that he does know what needs to be done. Still dubious after the first garage to diagnose it knicked the van! (Whole other story).
I agree with what you are saying about the devil you know. The van is solid underneath with very good body work.
Plus I'm stubborn and don't want it to beat me / prove my wife right 馃ぃ
