Hi all,

Have any of you got the 1.9d (not turbo)? whats it like? any good?
Many have prob read my saga on the poorly 2.4d Been to a vw specialist round our way and he has a 1.9d engine and box at a resonable price, app it will fit sraight in, everything is in the same place.

Just wanted some general advise on the engines,

Thanks in advance

they are a good engine very economical driven well ... im not so sure baout dropping straight in ... but dont really know ... would have thought some electronic dubrudio's wouldbe needed too

if you go down this route get the woodruffkey and the timing belt done while the engine is out

i like the 1.9td but top speed without thrashing is 75

and they struggle a bit towing untill they get going ... oil needs changing regulary too with the right one ...

I've got a 1.9d mate, I have absolutely no complaints about it at all. Ok so it's not the quickest van going, but I have a camper interior in it & when we go away there's 4 of us, 2 dogs & all the rubbish you take on a trip, I can sit at 70-80 all day long on the motorway & it doesn't have any troubles. Pulls well enough from the stand still etc. If I drive sensibly it's extremely economical, slows a tad going up steep hills but I can live with this.

At the end of the day, I didn't buy the van to break any land speed records, I usually potter along with the music turned up enjoying the plush ride. In fact I'm so with the 1.9d that I'm about to move on to another 1.9d 800 special. T:

hi yes they are good engines, usually they are given a hard time by people, but as long as they are set up correctly, oil and filters changed often not pushed to the limit all the time you will find they are a very good engine, just get the timing gear changed, check the bottom pully for wear, make sure the engine you are buying has been looked after check the history of the van and if not happy walk away hopr this helps if you need any more advise get in touch cheers jayT:

I have one and well happy with 170,000 on the clock. Get 85mph and 70miles for 10euros at e1.15 per liter. Not sure whatthat that is in gallons. Simple engine to work on and parts are cheap and plentyfull. Plus less to go wrong. If you dont mind not getting speeding tickets go for it.

Mine's done 273,000 miles, will carry two (heavy) British bikes plus tools, cruises at 75, will run to over 80 easy if I ask it to, and in general daily use knocks out around 35-37 to the gallon. I wouldn't have anything else!!!

hi i own a 1.9td which is much the same as the non turbo version ... cracking little engine , not the fastest thing around but chugs along all day at around 40 to 42 mpg .. plus you dont have all the electronic gubbins to go wrong keep things simple.. i can see why you want to remove the 2.4 almost every engine related post is about cylinder heads / head gaskets.. must be made of cheese or something..

I've had a 1.9d for just under a year now... no problems to speak of, treat it well and it'll treat you well. Took me and the missus on a 4000 mile round trip of europe last summer with it full loaded with bed, cooker and two bikes on the back etc. Lost a bit of water at times, but just a boring slightly perished hose. Even managed to get us up some massive alps in switzerland! :ILU:

Go for it... very basic engine to service/look after, and does the job if you're not a speed freak! (if you are, get a golf gti!) Rasp:
