Any ideas what this does?

It's on the side panel behind the drivers seat on 2001 ex AA van.

Worked out from some other posts that it is an immobiliser.

How do I know if it works?

My key looks like a normal key. I'm sure it doesn't have a transponder in it.

Had mine removed there is usualy a fob and in the seat is a pressure switch
this enabled the AA man to get out with his keys and leave engine running.
Cheers

There is an extra button on the dash (somewhere- I don't have an ex AA) and when pressed you can get out with the engine running taking the keys with you. Any use of gears or brake will kill the engine.

I don't have a key fob and there is no red button on the dash (except what I assume are the hazard lights).

I think I'll try disconnecting the cables and see what happens.
