Well I have tried a range of tyres on 17" wheels & so far the best IMHO is 215 50 17 as its pretty close to the original rolling diameter So doesn't affect the gearing too much. At 70 on the clock you should be doing 71.3, & The 50 profile is enough to give a bit of comfort without looking too chunky on the rim. The 55s will increase your speed to 74 at 70 on the clock it increases the range between the gears they make the van feel a little underpowered & reduce the MPG figures. 45s will drop your speed at 70 to 69 & reduce the gear ratio giving you a livelier van & better economy around town at the expense of motorway driving. Biggest problem with the 45s is ride comfort. :(
As for tyre width, remember 195s are the standard & the more rubber you put on the road the more friction you get = poorer fuel consumption. So no need for lots of rubber unless you have loads of power & a lead foot I:

You may find this handy. *<:)>

I've got to be honest on my 1.9td I dont really notice any acceleration difference between 15s (standard 195s) and 17s(225/55s) but extra gearing at top end cruising is a welcome benefit. I tend to run the van at 3k rpm as its where it sounds less stressed and if I remember right a GPS would show on 15s 58 mph and on 17s 64 mph
