Hi guys. I'm afretr some advice. My lad is 17 in May and desperate to drive, I doubt I'd get him insured for the van and don't really want him using it. Do any of you have recent experience of the best/cheapest way to get him insured and what's the best option in a car sub 2K.

I think I'd be happier with a black box in the car. My lad is 17 in July and it looks like a VW Up! / Skoda Citigo / Seat Mii will all come in at ÂŁ860 ish once he has a full licence. In the meantime I've just reinsured my 2008 Mini Cooper for ÂŁ157 which goes up to about ÂŁ400 with him on as a learner (and then ÂŁ1200 as a full driver but there's no way he's driving a mini cooper with my NCB and history at risk)

A long shot but how about a brand new car that comes with free insurance, Vauxhall used to do this offer quite a bit, a few hundred a month on pcp and hand it back in 2/3 years, by which time hopefully he has a few years NCD. I found out quite a few local kids had done this as I was wondering how/why new drivers were rolling in brand new cars, small and basic hatchbacks but nether the less still a lovely car for a youngster.

Never looked at it myself so may be no good or not even offered anymore.

Hi,

In the real world there isn't really a cheap option for 17 year old drivers I'm afraid. Most insurers would require the fitment of a black box to get a competitive premium nowadays.

Whilst we are able to cover 17 year olds on our VW camper van scheme we wouldn't be able to provide cover for him to be a named driver ,however it doesn't sound like this was a route you really wanted to go down anyway.

Regards,
Dan.
