What happens when a gear box fails:* ok I now it doesn't go along or it makes funny noises :) but what happens before:* does it not go into gear, make crunching noises or a droning noise. Mines just making a noises at between 2200 and 2700 rpm in 6th and it sounds like the lay shaft with end float. now after spending a bit of money on the engine it's really the last thing I want to go but if it needs a new box can the one I have got be updated or is it going to be an exchange. It maybe something to do with the power through the box anyway:D but don't want it to seize up while on the motorway :( merry Christmas everyone*<:)>

Currently, on my 2.5/130 I have no 6th - it just started "easing" itself out of 6th on the motorway, cruising at around 70 - no noises of any sort prior to going. Still drives in 5th, although the lever moves back & forth as you ease the power on & off (does not do it in 1/2 or 3/4th).

It's going in for a recon box in the new year.

I looked at getting my gearbox repaired but did not want the downtime as it's a working van. Recon boxes see to go from about £600 > £2.500 (for a VW/TPS one).

Found one for £1,300, £300 for fitting (at the same place) with 3 months/9,000m warranty.

Just to add, talking to people it seems that the T5/2.5 boxes tend to "just go" with little or no prior warning.

I'll post how I get on.

Next job after that - a stainless steel exhaust, rear springs, Caravelle headlights & a respray. (will leave team silver & join team black or grey).

I like black but a pain to keep cleanT: don't know about grey:* the gear box seems to have got noisier since the engine got rebuild and like you bc it's a working van. May go the route of getting mine overhauled as I know it's history but don't want to go the same way as the engine. I think it sounds like wear in a bearing as if you keep the power on its not there, it's only when you seem to cruise that the noise is obvious. if it does expire at speed I don't really what it to lock the front wheels or do more damage as its a new dmf and clutch os is it better to get it fixed before it broke or get it fixed when it breaks:)

If it were not for the time issue I would have definatly gone down the route of getting my own box rebuilt. From my very limited knowledge of gearboxes my money would be on bearings &/or worn syncro's. I did have a quote of "around £850" to have my gearbox taken out, repaired & put back in again (place near Dartford) & would take 3/4 days which I though may very well end up 4/5 days - possibly more if any parts required had to come from Germany.

I've had black in the past & know what it's like to keep clean (1976 mkI Escort Mexico), but it does look nice. My wife has a new Golf in metallic black & that does not seen as bad as solid black. Then again, I've had a dark graphite (mkII Astra Van) & that not only looked nice it was not too bad to keep clean.

After some thought I decided to spend some money on what I have now (54 plate 2.5/130, LWB with most of the toys I want). Personally, I don't think the T5.1 "cuts it" - dosent look that much differnt to the T5 & I'm not convinced (yet) about the 4 pots. A lot of cash to lay out, so when I do, maybe to wait for the T6 ?

I expect I will end up spending about what it's worth, but at least I'll know exactly what's been done to it & I'm not one to change my vehicles that often.

Festa, would you consider the VW Racing AP 6 pots like i have on my Caddy Sportline?

VWR will be putting the kit into production if we can get enough interest...I was going to buy Forge but had a bad time with fitment of my hoses which only got sorted after about 6months of constant emails
