Hey guys

A mate just bought a T4 2.5 TDI and has ran out of diesel. We put 10 litres in and managed to get it started and reving for a few seconds but then stalls. This has happened a few times and each time has taken a lot of cranking to finally fire up. Obviously still too much air in the system? Also, when he was trying to see if there was a bleeder on the filter, he broke the plastic part off the bottom of the filter itself, as it was very brittle. Could that be causing it issues too?

You are sucking air in through the filter from the broken plastic drain valve. You will need to replace this or buy a new filter which comes with the valve. I suggest you fill the new filter with diesel before putting the top plastic return valve in place. Also tell him to be a bit more gentle with stuff, or he'll get this weeks dunce hat. 馃榿

Haha, cheers mate! If it was sucking in air when trying to start it, wouldn鈥檛 diesel leak out when parked?

Tank is below the pipes to filter level...
You should be able to see air bubbles in the clear plastic pipe from the filter to pump if that is the problem.
VERY common for fuel to flow back to the tank....there is no inline pump....it's "sucked" by the engine pump/injector unit.
You get a leak.....it sucks air!
Do some reading on the forum.....must be only eleventeen hundred posts.

Ahhh, that鈥檚 why it wasn鈥檛 leaking diesel through the valve! Makes sense! Obviously just sucking it air , as Bingley mentioned.
Will take a few days for him to get a new filter delivered here - so we might try blocking off the valve so he can at least get the van back home. Thanks guys 馃嵒
