2.5TDi: what's your mileage?!

Hello fellow T4 owners,

A spontaneous question.

Our lovely 2.5TDi ACV engine is going strong at just over 214,000miles with good MPG.

We got the van in Oct 2016 with 200,000miles; done basic conversion and spent so far about £2,000 on 2x full service, MOT and some age-rlated necessary repairs (cam belts + water pump, fan belt, leaking rocker cover, glow plugs, starter motor, fuel pump timing, leaking radiator and few pipes, new tyres, CV joints).

Just done oil + fuel + air filter & fluid change (with 100% diesel purge in the fuel filter) and also did the famous turbo inlet plastic pipe repair.

She's ever so strong!
No more dead spot on boost (used to be very weak up to 1800rpm, then G-force).
First crank and she's BRRRM! Not even a puff of smoke at start up.
Absolutely no sign of concerns this year so far.
Well, other than hissing brake booster upon application (soon to be replaced...)

This got me wondering; most of fellow 2.5TDi owners must be getting over 200,000miles by now.
Or more with original engine and gearbox?

So to happy 2.5TDi owners:

WHAT'S YOUR MILEAGE?!

Why not start a "Poll", with options of say 50-100k, 100-150k, etc

If you can't figure it out, let me know (a very nice mod told me how to do it....I think he's in hiding now I: )

Almost worn out now then TURK .................. I can talk, only done 24 miles so far this year LOL:LOL:LOL:

Yeah! .............. She's more of a museum piece now Scruffy :) As I drive my MultiVan on a weekly basis over here, much safer having the steering-wheel on the correct side! I: Besides, I tend to spend more time in my workshop these days instead of driving around aimlessly.

I never thought I would say this, but I kind of miss sitting in a traffic jam! :* Nothing like sitting in a comfortable vehicle listening to some decent tunes :)

That's reasonably newish as well Huskyman :) and that's really nothing compared to what these engines can take. I've seen some with over 400,000 miles on the original engine! It's the chassis and bodywork that's really the issue. How many of us clean the underside after a harsh winter driving around on gritted roads ?

The real question is ................ who has the highest original mileage ?

Oh, and thanks mate T: Lulu looks just as good underneath as well, in fact, you'd be hard pushed to find any rust anywhere :D

Thanks everyone, low milers!

The poll is now live!

Stalking through the older threads on here, people were quoting 200,000 - 250,000miles on posts dating back in 2010-2013.
There were even some comments stating people have been buying 200,000+mileage T4s (instead of lower mileage T5s...) in those days.

Have they now retired and parts shared to other surviving T4s?

Highest miles currently I can find https://suchen.mobile.de/fahrzeuge/details.html?id=253387113&damageUnrepaired=NO_DAMAGE_UNREPAIRED&isSearchRequest=true&makeModelVariant1.makeId=25200&makeModelVariant1.modelGroupId=2&pageNumber=1&scopeId=C&sortOption.sortBy=specifics.mileage&sortOption.sortOrder=DESCENDING&fnai=prev&searchId=2d87ce5d-db65-5b9e-bf81-344a7b7daf22

Saw one a while back with around 3 million Km's. If it's really original I hate to see one retire (my main dealer has a Multivan growing mould in the yard ..................... I'm so sad every time I see it; even if it is a petrol / auto :blg

Some very nice later German Edition Multivans being offered with around 350,000 MILES, and still asking very strong money. One last year advertised with 4,000 miles, but they wanted 38k Euro

I will be honest it's ONLY FACTORY ORIGINAL VEHICLES that interest me though; as that's where the money is :wzd

Mine is a bit over 100k, 20 years on and I'm still RUNNING THE BL00DY THING IN. My friends say they are all going to help dig a large grave for us both; when the time comes LOL:LOL:LOL:LOL:LOL:

That's crazy mileage on the German website, scruffy. There are few more 700-800,000km (approx 435 - 500,000 miles!) still on the market! They look like motorway taxi though.

As quick search on eBay:

LWB Day van, 223,000miles, £4,500ono

SWB Caravelle, 285,000 miles, currently £1550 bid (same seller as above!)

SWB part conversion Projektzwo, 221,500miles, starting bid £2,500

LWB Caravelle twin door, 351,000miles, starting bid £2,500!

There are plenty of bus with sub-200,000 miles, and quite a number of them even closer to 100,000miles.

I'd like to reach at least 250,000miles with ours, if rust doesn't eat her up before then.

250k to my mind is A VERY MODEST expectation for an ACV engine. Correctly maintained 500k should be a realistic target.

With regard to the rust situation, that is down to how you approach things. Mine still pretty much looks like its VW press photo, taken for the Multivan re-launch in early 1998 :ILU:

Yeh g60, seems there are quite a few still looking good with some reasonable history; and very often over 500,000 Kms on the clock.

Different markets use and maintain vehicles in different ways as you know, and once based in mainland Europe you can stretch your legs a lot more. Here in the UK, you find a serious traffic jam travelling a couple of miles to the local supermarket.

To my mind mileage is like age, IT'S JUST A NUMBER. Worry about the maintenance, not just what's showing on the clock T:T:

There's also a few people ready with shovels at the moment! Rasp:

As to mileage, a LOT depends upon road conditions.
Where I live, they never use salt on the roads. T:

In last 12 years living here, I think they've used grit (crushed rock actually) only twice.
I can see where the grit comes from, and it's no-where near any salt water. :) (Unless the tide comes in to 200m high!)

Further south in Norway, they DO use salt.....Bloody Southerners!

I'm a bit surprised how the poll is turning out!

I thought there would be more 2.5TDi in above 200,000miles than less. Interesting!
