Hi guys,

My 2.5 petrol synchro has started making a whine in 5th gear, and now in 4th. Today the gear stick started moving around a lot!

Does this mean the gear box is gone? I got a new clutch in Feb and that was pricey ($2500), if it is the gearbox does anyone know if it is the same as the 2.5 synchro petrol? or different? part number? where i can get one in Aus? and how much?

Or if its something else, what is it?

first check your linkage ontop of the box. the balls wear and fail.

check/replace your gearbox oil ........maybe 20yrs old and low level.

It may simply be that a loose gear change mechanism is making a whine sound louder because of how its not positioned quite right anymore.
Have a look-see and sort if necessary because you'd have to do that anyway if you change the box.
You dont say what mileage you have but I'm guessing its getting on a bit and as Steve say its worth changing the oil as its probably old and low.

The 5th gear runs on a nylon encased needle bearing which can melt if the oil level gets too low.
The needles can then drop out and cause major issues.
