During a long run the top end tap tap taps. I assume it is the valve adjustment?

Easy DIY job is it?

Hydraulic so no adjustment, engine oil flush and the correct oil of decent quality is about all you can do without getting the spanners out. T:

Okay. It's recently had a service at the local garage so the oil/filters are new. 10/40 oil was used. Could the lifters being out of adjustment cause MPG to drop to low 20's?

Tappets would have to be extremely noisy to really affect Mpg. And without stripping you wont know if the noise is caused by worn camshaft, worn head or worn hydraulic tappets. You can buy additives that claim to quieten noisy hydraulic tappets, never tried them though.

cambelt slipped valves kissing the pistons ? that what happen mine after the PO kindly only change the cambelt and the tensioner let go

It only sounds like one that is out of spec so I doubt my MPG problem is this.

I'm also chasing this noise round the engine, just had diesel pump checked, and vacuum pump changed... Still tapping away, next stop cam shaft check by a man with spanners

is it a diesel knok sounds to me as a dogey injector.you l only hear the knok on tickover, if it go s away at 15000 + revs

I have a tap tap tapping on my vw 2.4.
just took it to a vw and audi specialist who was most certain it was a hydrolic tappit or the camshaft worn..

anyone know A rough price for this to be fixed. ??

is it something a novic like me can do with free time on his hands.

the guy said the cambelt needs to come of, the front end body need to come off etc...

Took cover off and inspected cam for wear, cam n tappets all ok, fan and auxiliary belt disconnected engine still making noise. Makes more noise when over running, and as for the oil leak it would appear to be coming from a pipe or summat near the turbo..

Unfortunately the only way to check hydraulic tappets is take them out, throw them in the bin and replace with new ones.
