Caravelle, many times when I brake I get a heavy notching noise which I presume is the ABS. This also all the time sometimes if I pump its fine. Changed discs and pads but didnt help, would it be the ABS sensors need replaced? Thanks anyone

Possibly a faulty sensor.

Get someone with VCDS to hook your van up to their computer and check for any faults. they can also check the sensor readings while you're driving to see if there's any speed differences registering which can cause the ABS to activate.

Are you sure you have ABS?
In the UK it was a very expensive extra and therefore rather unusual.
If its ABS that your hearing you should also be feeling pulsing on the brake pedal.

if it's got ABS it should be listed in the options, I know mine has it and I just checked the sticker and found this code :
1AD = Anti-lock brake system (ABS) with electronic differential lock (EDL)

Usual culprits for this on most vehicles is either the ABS sensor and/or it's wiring; or the reluctor ring on the hub (the toothed ring which the sensor "looks" at) - these can corrode and crack which increases the distance between the teeth, thus fooling the ABS controller into thinking that the wheel is spinning too slowly for the vehicle's road speed.

Both are a relatively easy and cheap fix T:

Mine malfunctioned due to a cracked reluctor ring - it only did it a low speeds, say below 15mph.

Fitted a complete new driveshaft from J&R as the outer bot had gone as well. Easy fix for about £60 if I remember right.
