Ah ok - so not the full-on lights display. I think if you get the "no communications" fault codes it's game over - otherwise you stand a chance that it will just be a wiring problem...

This is becoming a right PITA now. I have the full disco with no speedo and bouncing/beeping fuel gauge. So far I have checked the rear looms, they were perfect and read 12ish (I cant remember exact voltage) volts. I checked the plugs under the pax seat, they were fine. The fwd loom, when disconnected from the sensors only read a few volts (not usre if this means the fwd loom is U/S?). I need to pop it on VAGCOM again but I think Im looking at an ABS ECU. Ill be throwing it at a garage very soon.

Sorry to hijack Fluffsri but do you know where the cables for the front sensors connect into the main loom? I've got a new OSF ABS loom to fit, the cable is quite long but I've not had a chance to have a look what with the weather etc.

No mate, its something I was going to look into. Somewhere on here is a thread and a guy has changed hs, he didnt give exact descrfiption but did mention it doesnt take long.

VW T5 campervan -- Had the intermittent failure codes from the ABS in VCDS lite (005705 - Powertrain Data Bus: Missing Message from ABS Controller) P1649 - 000 - - - Intermittent
After trying all the other options-- reseating connectors \looking for faulty earths etc. decided I had nothing to loose by taking ecu off and cutting top cover off, as mentioned in other threads. Nothing was visibly wrong but the pins from the connection plug look to be a push through\small spring lug connections onto circuit board. S previously stated I had nothing to loose so I carefully soldered all the back of the pins where they come through the circuit board.
I've put the van back together and done 50 miles and touch wood all is now OK :) --no faults showing on VCDS, whereas before several ABS faults were always logged even after clearing them and driving a few miles.
So, after trying all other options and if you a reasonably competent at soldering I would suggest it's worth a try.

My update to this thread.

The front ABS sensors connect under the battery tray. Its a proper pain in the to remove and to try to cut and resplice the new cable in.

I replaced the cable and sensor and VAGCOM gave the same fault. At that point I removed the ABS ECU and sent it for testing, you can still drive the van but it wont have ABS (mine hadn't had ABS for months anyway). ECU testing tested the ECU and reported it as unrepairable. When it was returned to me I cut it open and found the biggest of the chips inside had a small burn on it. I bought a new ECU from Banwy and had it fitted, solved everything!
