hi peeps. when coming to a stop in my 2.5 tdi, be it from 70 or 30, once i slow to around 10 or 15 mph the abs gives about 4 taps on my pedal before coming to a standstill. no lights on the dash. One ( or maybe both ) or my rear wheel bearings is on its way out & a mate said that could have something to do with it. anyone else experienced the same problem? thanks as ever.:ILU:

Yeah mine also does that, and after investigating i found one of the spiggot rings snapped on the driveshafts, this will give sprodiac speed pulses that thinks the wheel is locking up activating the ABS.

Had exactly the same problem as this on an Audi A6 Avant recently. Those spigot rings are pretty fragile and a worn wheel bearing could easily dislodge or crack them.

cheers lads. where are the spigot rings located on the driveshafts? easy to change whilst doing bearings? supposed to be done an axle at a time anyway arent they? ( front wheels / back wheels together)

ok ive realised what spigot rings are now and will have a check when i get chance. whats the standard size for a t4? quick search on google just gives 66.6 57.1 which is for using merc wheels :*

I've had the same issue on an A4. In my case it was a cracked ABS ring. The ABS probe detect a larger gap between teeth as the crack goes by thus interpreting a locking wheel. Since we're only talking a few thous, it's only detected at low speeds. Pic for reference only - not a T4 but self explanatory.

ah . this sounds more likely to me. im guessing it only has to have one broken ring for this to happen. is there one present on each wheel?

Yes, one per wheel. The rear is quite obvious, especially if it's not a syncro. They are inboard of the swingarm. You can practically touch it by reaching your hand behind the wheel - but only a meticulous inspection will most likely reveal a crack.

They are cheaper than I was expecting! I am lead to believe that VW ones are hard to get?

Second that! How easy to change? I was told I may as well replace the outer cv joints at the same time as you have to take them off any way.
Would love to know if there is a way to change the rings wiith out removing drive shafts!

had this sorted today! new n/s cv joint and all is well. £110 fitted. abs was cracked & rattling loose on the driveshaft! T:

Getting worse now (I bought Andy's Van) might just pull the ABS fuse for now.

Anybody know the VW part number?

Same problem on mine , both front rings are split ! you can get them on ebay , search for VW TRANSPORTER T4 DRIVESHAFT ABS RELUCTOR RING NEW . They seem to be standard but best take measurements and tooth count !:)
