We have T4 2.5TDi Caravelle, 2000 reg. It has an automatic gearbox. According to the service history, it had a new bear box at 4 years old and we had the gearbox reengineered 6 years ago. An auto box engineer has advised us to sell whilst the going is good as if the gear box goes again it will cost in excess of £3000 to repair. His theory is that the auto gearbox was designed for the domestic market and isn't up the job. I would appreciate the opinion of other knowledgable people on this - love our van and don't want to over-react to one person's opinion! Thanks Sue

I bought a camper a few months ago that has an auto. Never thought much of it as it had a full rebuild receipt a few thousand miles earlier
It started developing faults a few hundred miles after and they are getting worse. Now in the proces of changing the box to manual as it seems pointless spending more money on the auto, didn't even like driving the auto anyway.
Its the first auto vehicle I have ever owned and I have had plenty of vehicles (currently 9 including 6 classic cars and bikes) and there will never be another.
I reckon you would be better paying the money to get the conversion rather than spending several grand on another repair

Auto box is fine if cared for!
Needs the CORRECT fluid.
Most people (garages, etc) just use Dex III....destroys them.
There's a reason why the genuine fluid is 4 times the price I:

I'd buy a different van before swapping to a manual box!

I have the same van as you, 2003. bought 6 years ago (box serviced about 3 years ago) and had no trouble with the auto box although i was waiting for it to fail having read the posts on hear. Recently it completely failed on 149k miles. I was quoted about £665+VAT to strip and check it plus seals and new oil etc plus more labour and parts if needed. I had it converted to manual last week.
I loved the auto box for the 6years i had it but i'm also enjoying the manual now, its just different.

Chances are it was wrongly serviced.
VW fluid is around £80/litre.
4.5 litres gives you around £360 just for the correct fluid!!!!

IF you had it serviced for less than £600....they used DEXIII fluid and that kills the box!

Thanks for you help everyone. What sort of money would we be looking at for a manual conversion?

I imagine you could be looking at £1800-£2500 if you are buying the parts and paying someone to fit it
I bought a donor vehicle when I converted mine as there are a few bits that are needed.
I did the conversion myself so there were no labour charges but I think I had about 30 hours at it, a few of those were trying to sort the wiring out which is actually quite easy when you know what you need to do.
It could probably be done in 16 hours or less if the garage has experience of the conversion process.
Cost breakdown for me was as follows.
Donor vehicle £920
DMF and clutch kit £300
Gear linkage bush kit £12
Driveshaft gasket £5
Gear oil £14
Total £1251
I have had back £1000 for parts sold from donor vehicle and automatic specific parts no longer required

Come on Gaz...5 litres of Febi VW ATF costs about £40 - £50 here. Of course, I expect it will be dearer in Norway

Don't Febi/Bilstein supply VW ?....we all know VW inflate prices
Not unless Bilstein have become a petroleum refiner. Anyway genuine lubricants @ -60%, so not a worry for me.

Just don't need an auto in my life, unless it is financial suicide to go for the manual option (as it is with certain vehicles) T:T:
