Anyone changed an alternator belt on a 2.5tdi

Looks like the belt wont come off the tensioner without removing it.

is that right?

It can be done without taking the roller off but its a bit tricky but so is taking the roller off.
You kinda have to twist the belt and ram your hand up the gap whilst pushing the twisted belt up the gap its not easy but acheivable, releasing the spring tensioner is a bit tricky aswell and you have to to get the old belt off and the new belt on. Stick at it though you will find a way eventuallyT:

Hi,

The easiest way I have found of slackening the tensioner to remove the belt (without the VW tool)
Is to use a 12" adjustable spanner and open it just enough to slide over the rod which is part of the tensioner.

The Tensioner is located in the narrow gap between the engine and the drivers side chassis leg, there is not very much room but it is possible.

That's how I do them. No skinned knuckles for me

Hope it helps.

Cheers Trev.

Cheers guys.

So if i'm right I have to put a spanner on the tensioner rod and move the tensioner while trying to remove the belt?

Right - I'll have another go in the next few days!
