Hi, Just bought a Jan 1998 T4 1.9 TD 800 Special and need a decent manual for it. There seem to be a few Elsawin options available on ebay and I'm wondering if any of them are any good/are what they say they are? It's just that £3.50 seems a little too good to be true for every VAG model ever etc etc. Also can anyone link me to a VIN decoder for my van.

Just as an aside from all this I'm an electromechanical engineer with 20 years professional experience, I specialise in high power DC systems but also have experience with industrial air con (not car, but the principle is the same) and Absorbtion fridges (3 way fridges) so hope to be helpful on here.

I have used the eBay supplied Elaswin software before, and it gives loads of info. It does assume that you have some mechanical knowledge. I used it when changed the clutch on my ex AA van and gives all the steps including torque settings etc for everything. I have the 64bit version as it need to covers the missus Seat Ibiza as well.

For the price I think it is worth it. The only disadvantage is I have to print out the required pages as I have nowhere top put a PC outside I the garage, but that may change if I can pick up a decent 2nd laptop, as I will install it with Vagcom for diagnosis as well.

Thank you very much. Did a little tinkering over the weekend and had to resort to the white knuckle torque table... one white knuckle, two white knuckles, three then for. After that you go straight to F**king tight.

Got vagcom and elsawin on there, its tough enough to take a few knocks and I dont care if i get oily thumbprints all over it.

I really should get to grips with plugging my cars in. Nothing to do on the T4 as it's a 1.9td so has not magic box. my passat however is full of stuff and I've never done it. Odd really as I spend all day plugging my laptop into this and that but just not the car. Where is a good place to start if I go this way, what leads will I need, is there a standard connection, is VAGCOM the way forward for VW's?
