My Auto box has started leaking oil and stuttering as it moves through the gears so I figure I've got a few weeks before it packs in. :(

I'm resigned to the fact it could cost upwards of a grand to fix but wanted to understand all the angles before I turn up at the garage.... for example is it worth considering converting to a manual?

From my obsessive market searching when I bought the bus, I found the autos were about £1k cheaper than the manuals on average so my logic is simply that spending 1k on a conversion is an investment, rather than dead money. Does that sound reasonable? Apart from personal preference is there any other reason to stick with the auto?

If I stick with the auto, any things I need to look out for? What sort of price should I expect to pay? How would this compare with cost of converting?

Thanks!

I'm in the identical situation. Box leaking oil, not acting right. Took it to a gearbox specialist and they said box knackered and possibly the ecu. They want £2200+vat for installation of recon box.

I've had a desperate quote of £1600 to have it converted to manual.

Freudian slip :D

I think you could do much better than 2200... I did a bit of ringing round at the time and best quote was 1200 all in, to fit a recon auto box. Converting is a pig of a job apparently and you could end up with a lot of ongoing issues if it's not done perfectly.

Thankfully it wasn't actually my gearbox that was leaking, there was a seperate leak from above that was dripping onto the gearbox and made it look that way. Paid 100 quid to have box serviced and it's ok now.

Definitely ring round if I were you, will dig out the number of the guy in Bradford that quoted me 1200 if you want. He's pretty sound, did a mates auto box on a sharan a few months ago and did a really good job apparently.

100 quid sounds VERY cheap....the "correct" fluid alone costs about three times that to have it flushed and replaced!
Make sure they didn't put DEX111 in it...."most" auto boxes use it, but it kills the 02M/02P units.
The transmission "specialists" that replaced my box wanted to charge me just over 600 quid to remove the DEX111, power-flush the box/torque converter, and put the "correct" fluid in.....
Thing was, it was THEY that had filled it with DEX!!!!
Luckily I'd only done a couple of hundred miles before I realised. (Most of that driving to and from them.)
Rest assured, once they'd done it, I drove out without paying the bill, and eventually got an apology from their head office.
sjwk......if yours is a T5, it could be different.

Hey Gaz!

The mechanic that serviced my van did put Dex-3 in it, because the oil already in the box appeared red.

We’ve driven it 30 miles since and noticed it struggling between gears.

Did yours correct after being flushed and replaced with VW yellow oil?

It did after it had been rebuilt!
I only drove a couple of hundered miles before getting them to change it though.
DEX111 actually overheats and burns part of the gearbox if run for long.
