I've seen a few older T5 Caravelle's for sale with automatic gearboxes, which seem to be a bit cheaper. Is it generally not seen as a good thing with regards to reliability or is the lower price just a co-incidence? I read somewhere about the auto gearboxes on the VR6 T4's only lasting around 80,000 miles each and wondered if the same was true with the 2.5TDI T5 boxes.

Cheers.

Are you sure they're not just cheaper because they have higher mileage? Practically all execs are auto - the gearbox of choice for high mileage airport cars.

My local taxi firm has 3 2.5tdi auto velles in daily use that my mechanic looks after - one's on 270k, one on 300k and one on 330k.

Strangely, it was the 270k one that's had a new box, at about the 230k mark - the other two are original.

to be fair, they're religious about maintenance and servicing, and they're not thrashed, just used a lot..

Cheaper due to the Tiptronic gearbox often mistakenly called a DSG which obviously not
They are prone to failure
And expensive to repair
