Been doing some more searches which has bought up a cople of interesting finds.

All 4 gear automatic VAG boxes are referred to as AG4. Then split into the following phases:

  • Phase I, 098, 1990 - 1994 Without a lock-up torque converter, German Built
  • Phase II, 098 01P, 1995 - 97 With a lock-up torque converter, Mexican built
  • Phase II ETA, 098 01P, 97 - on - With a lock-up torque converter, Mexican built
Their were some slight changes to Phase II in 97 onwards "Phase II ETA"

It also seems 98 VW introduced a system called "E-Gas" :-

vw said:
Complaint:
A complaint of no movement, a neutral condition or a hesitation on take-off may be the customer complaint, especially if it is a vehicle with a new second owner.

Cause:
This can be caused by the driver of the vehicle. If the driver applies the brakes at the same time the throttle is depressed, as in the case of a two-footed driver, these conditions
will occur.

Correction:
When Volkswagen introduced electric throttle control in 1998, the throttle cable was eliminated, making this a drive-by-wire system known as “E-GAS” on a VW or “EPC” on an Audi. Brake-pedal function overrides any throttle operation. Therefore, if the brake and the throttle are depressed at the same time, the ETC computer will return engine speed to idle, which is all that will be available. No DTCs will be stored.

This is a normal reaction of this system because of safety issues. To cancel this default action and return to normal throttle operation, release the brake pedal and rapidly apply the accelerator pedal, or release the accelerator pedal and then reapply it.

Note: Road-test the vehicle with the customer driving and notice the customer’s driving habits to determine whether two-footed operation is the cause of the complaint.
This would explain the problem of 'rolling back on hills' people have reported

I have found a few interesting file regarding maintenance direct from VW.

  1. VW - AG4 Transmission Diagnosis worksheet.pdf
  2. VW - Differences Between Phase II and Phase II ETA.pdf
  3. VW - Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) Seeping From.pdf
  4. VW - TRANSMISSION TEST KIT.pdf
  5. VW - New VW ATF 01M 01P transmission checking ATF level changing ATF.pdf
I've also uploaded the Sonnax And the AltUSA technical bulletins as i found it pretty insightful.

  1. sonnax - AG4 technical bulletin.pdf
  2. altousa - Fix Bottom Pressure Plate Problems.pdf
These cover possible problems and fix including:
  • TCC boost valve kit
  • Shift Cups
  • Solenoids
  • Wiring Looms
  • Pressure Regulator Valves
  • Bottom Pressure Plate
Hope all this is of use to some people!:)

EDIT: PDF added: Automatic_transmission_fluid_change_mitchell.pdf This outlines the auto gearbox oil change from the Mitchell service manual.

Updated Information:

The Gearboxes country of origin:

  • Phase I, 098, 1990 - 1994 Without a lock-up torque converter, German Built
  • Phase II, 098 01P, 1995 - 97 With a lock-up torque converter, Mexican built
  • Phase II ETA, 098 01P, 97 - on - With a lock-up torque converter, Mexican built
I would be interested if anyone has had any problems with a 1999-1994 automatic gearbox

More information regarding the e-gas system.

In diesel engines it will appear on the vehicle is stopped and operated foot brake the gearbox in the Forward drive positions with the exception of Level 1 in the "idle", so the engine is disconnected from the drivetrain, it will also keep out vibration from the drive train and contribute to the gain in comfort.
so it seem this is stating that this system was only in Diesels after the e-gas was introduced in 98. Interested if anyone could disprove this?

Me! Im not mechanic or even nearly have a clue about engines though its surprising how much you can learn from this awsome site. My 1999 velle has only 37'000 on the clock and has trouble shifting from 1st and often second? Often is quite juddery between gears and im not sure what to do next? We have no Auto experts in our area. A mechanic friend of mine is about to change transmission fluid for me but after having a diognostic reading the VAGOM was showing 2 electrical faults? Could this be loose wires? Or faulty E.C.U? Its driving me crazy! :)

Hi Jim - is there any way that you could send me details of the wiring that goes into the 01P control Module. I have no comms with the control unit (12v going in and a good earth, but no comms) and I was wanting to fix the wiring to read it before I disassemble the valve body. Was wanting to check error codes first.

Any info would be gratefully received

Thanks
