Just booked my van in for a cambelt change in a couple of weeks.(2.5tdi)
Tried my local independant garage that i use and he came back with a price of £480 so ive just rang VW Listers van centre in Coventry and they rather suprisingly quoted me £390 all in and supply me with a courtesy van and obviously i get a VW receipt.
Also suprising was how friendly they were considering my van is an 02plate and generally dealers ive found give up on you when your van is of a certain vintage.
The chap has even printed off for me all the receipts for the vans servicing and "odds and sods" over the 9 years of its life at VW.

You cant say fairer than that can you.................?

That's a very good price, have they quoted for a waterpump as well? If not make sure you add it.

Some dealers do give better prices for older cars/vans to try and keep you using them, perhaps your dealer has now started doIng thisT:

I had my 1.9TD done just after Christmas. Like you the local backstreet quoted about £400, the local main dealer that isn't even a van centre did it for £299, and sorted a few other bits like slack throttle cable and slightly dodgy cold start lever without me asking and without charge (just adjusted them not replaced). Chuffed to bits:)

Yeah that includes the water pump too.
I will continue to use them at them prices if they do a good job!
An interim service there is £89 which isnt bad for a dealer either. Full service is £229.
happy days.

A 2.5tdi water pump from vw is about £140. Quality belt kit and tensioner is about £150. So i don't see how they can do the job at the price quoted.

A VW garage won't pay those prices for parts though

This is VERY good to know! I just bought '52 plate T4 and the only thing I'm a bit worried about is the cambelt. The seller told me he is 'pretty sure it was done in the last 6 months'. So, if it goes, I'm just in Oxford and will book it in there!

shane, if you are not sure if your cambelt has been recently done if it goes could cost you the price of a engine recon not worth taking a chance.

i was told the same by the previous owner of my van but there is no receipted proof so im having it done just incase.

As for VW not being able to do this service for £390 who am i to argue with the price they charge???
£390 is what ive been told so thats what im payingI:
Theyre taking an extra 10% off because of the age of the van.:D

Thing is Barry, why pay dealer prices? They rob you blind and i for one dont like being robbed.. I cant see how a dealer would do a better job on a van over 10 years old than a vag specialist :*
