We have interior templates for many different vans that we carry out campervan conversions to, so we gave Dave the VW T5 LWB original hardboard panels that fit the internal recesses. He then used these as templates to cut panels out of sheet steel.

Both sides have been filled and sanded down several times now, and the cab has been sanded down ready to be primed

Next the tailgate to be overcome, I much prefer the tailgate look over the barn doors, but still wanted it to function. I thought folding down like a generic pickup truck would be best.

Its been cut down, but needs the aperature for the window to be panelled and filled.

The number plate wiring has to be fitted coming out of the floor and into the bottom of the tailgate.

The bottom half of the tailgate panel has been fit separately to the opening, as the bodyshell is actually fit lower down than the pickup chassis.

The handles been filled, and the window aperture has had a panel fitted to flatten it off.

At the cut line either side of the 2 pieces of tailgate there's now a gap to make a panel for!


Every task of this build seems to create another 2 tasks!

The plan is to have a removable canopy fitted on the rear of the pickup that will be the same height as the cab.

So in go 4 tube sections that the frame will slot into.

The frame can now be made and formed to follow the shape of the cab.

Like everything on this VW T5 pickup build all the brackets and sections are being made by hand.

The frame will all disassemble and reassemble with a just a spanner when finished, hopefully with ease!

Got the whole pickup in paint today!

I decided after thinking most people choose one of a kind colours for their common T5 transporters, why not choose the most common colour for our one of a kind VW T5 Pickup!

Colour of choice....

Here are some pictures, just trying the bumper for fit that we shipped over from Germany.


Also installed the Golf GTi style "sharkfin" headlights, now that we have finished flattening and re-painting the front end. I bought adaptors from travelinlite http://stores.ebay.co.uk/TravelinLite

They just plug straight into the T5 wiring loom and into the T5.1 GP headlights.

Latest pictures of the T5 Pickup, rear tub has been painted black.

Tailgate has been put into position to decide the best way to mount the bonnet hinges to create the fold down tail.

The frame for the canopy has all been shaped and assembled now , it will disassemble completely for easy storage when not in use. Amtrim have been contacted to make a fitted canopy that will cover the frame.

The hinges for the tailgate that Dave thought would work best were actually VW T5 bonnet hinges, as it should push the tailgate away from the back of the Van.

He designed some brackets that would mount the hinges to the rear pillar posts.

A simple catch that was used on the original drop side's fold down sides will keep the tailgate shut.
