I've had a new cigarette lighter, socket, and ashtray fitted by a VW specialist garage. Twas expensive.

I'm not sure that the ciggy socket is actually working. I haven't yet managed to get the lighter to get hot, but I did manage to get an electric seat cover to work. [or maybe it just got hot from me]

Anyway, I was unconvinced that it is working, though the light around the socket does light up when the draw is pulled out.

The things that plug into the socket [but not the lighter] have a light that's supposed to come on, on the thing you put in, don't they. [sorry if i'm getting too technical here for ya] They dont.

Then, tonight, coming home from work, I plugged in the electric seat cover and its little light did come on. Yeahhhh thinks I! Tis working. Maybe I didn't notice the light on the plug before as it was daylight, and now that it is dark, I can see it!

But................

When I got home, I turned off the headlights - and the little light on the plug went out. Strange, I thought - so I turned them back on. The light on the plug went back on. Tried again - lights off - all off - lights on - all on.

Now, this seems a bit strange to me. Is the cigarette socket supposed to work only when your headlights are switched on??? I didn't think so - but this seems to be how my new one works.

The garage that fitted it is about an hour's drive away, so I'm hoping that it's a very easy and quick fix that another garage can sort for me at very little cost. - so c'mon you experts - what's going on with my ashtray and lighter socket??

The light round the socket illuminates when the side/headlamps are on.

Plugs on chargers & suchlike often do not make good contact in the socket.

.
The light around the socket is on whenever I pull out the draw, regardless as to if the lights are on or not.

The power light on the plug, plugged into the socket, was on when the lights were on, and off when they were not. I turned them on and off several times and this light went on and off in partnership with the headlights.

Thank you. Yes, that makes sense. I'll see if I can get someone to swap them over for me.

Hi Patia,

I had the same issue, so looked into it and did the following for less than £10.

Bought a new 12v cig lighter off ebay (very cheap).

Bought a ''piggy back fuse'' from ebay (even cheaper).

bought some wire from maplins (the staff told me which sort i needed)

connected the wire to the piggy back fuse.

inserted the piggy back fuse into the fuses below drinks holder (T5) and fed the wire up behind the glove box into the dash.

Drilled a small hole in the dash and fitted in there - the top dash pops off so easy to drill a hole.

that now powers my sat nav or phone with no excessive wires hanging about.

But make sure you put the piggy back fuse in round the right way, or your extra wire will be on the supply side (i.e. not protected by the fuse!).
