Common 2.5TDi Engine Leaks

Now this is what we like to see. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words, well done. I may have a slight leak from where the oil return pipe connects to the turbo. I sometimes have a slight oil burning smell after working the engine that is only noticed if you get out of the van. I havn't gone looking for it yet but the 7 days you quoted is a bit of a worry. Incidently the tightening torque for those screws is 30Nm.

Oil return pipe gasket on the rear bottom of the turbo.
You may want to remove the engine to driveshfat support. I'd say certainly if you're doing the latter two you'll benefit from the extra space. You'll need a light to see up there. It can leak onto the exhaust manifold and drip down onto the engine block.
To remove these two bolts you'll need a 10mm socket. I had it on a universal wobbly type socket, two long extension bars and a short one. It's a long way up and you'll not get at them from above. Now removing them is an easy job.
Once they're out I managed to remove the old gasket and manouevre the new gasket into place from above and also, after removing the air intake tube, I got one of the bolts back in and finger tight from above.
Here's where it went badly for me. I couldn't get the other bolt (the one obscured slightly by the tube in the picture) back in from above so had to go from below and it's a wierd angle because of the manifold heat shield. It took me 7 hours on and off, over 3 days, lying on the floor in some wierd angles to get this bolt back in. I found that bending (smacking) the heat shield using a bar and hammer and getting the extension bars as tight to the engine as I could was the best angle to make the bolt (balanced in the socket on top of the extensions and wobbly joint) locate in its hole properly and catch a thread.
Replacement from here is just a reversal of removal.
I have noticed the slight smell of burning oil sometimes. It's worse when stopping after going up a hill. It's not noticable while in the van, & believe it could be the gasket on the bottom of the turbo. Mine is a Syncro & when I last had it on the hoist I couldn't even see the pipe because of the bevel box. Do you think it's possible to work from the top after removing more stuff than you did or will I have to remove the bevel box?

I made my own gasket for the return line on the turbo out of gasket paper but have since seen them listed on Ebay, for a K14 Turbo which is what you would have as standard, for only a few quid.
I have already bought the gasket through VW[quite cheap] & was going to fit it when I had the van on the hoist but try as I could every thing was hidden from view. I think I read on this forum that someone still had a leak after fitting a new gasket & finished up by making one with smaller holes.
